79Royal From what I heard, there were good performances tonight. At the very least, the 'first 11' will have to look over their shoulders.

Like the midfield pairing of ... oh ... errr ...Harper and Cisse?

Both Lita and Long were average at best. Lita gave up after about 60 minutes having barely threatened the goal - didn't force a save other than the handball, as far as I can remember. There was a pass put through which he waved on to the keeper. That said, first half he was very dangerous. I think we needed height and strength up front as Spurs didn't look troubled.

Now, midfield wasn't too bad. Rosenior played well first half and got forward while in the second, took up his increased defensive duties without much hassle. Convey was lightweight while Cox showed some real guts and strength. Defence didn't make mistakes and was punished by Keane's quick thinking. A Fed made two or three top saves.

Now, I'm not gonna do player ratings but pick three players who I felt impressed me. Cisse is a centre back at heart. Maybe. Some good tackles and a good positioning. Rosenior impressed - tidy, overlapped, did well. Cox was not a relevation but showed enough tidiness and enough skills for me to think he's worth a PL subs spot.

First half was ...

Fed; De La Cruz, Pearce, Ingi, Shorey; Rosenior, Harper, Cisse, Convey, Long, Lita with Long dropping back and right. Looked more a 4-4-2 than a 4-5-1.

Second half started with

Fed; Rosenior, Cisse, Ingi, De La Cruz; Cox, Harper, Shorey, Convey; Long, Lita

then Hunt replaced Shorey in central midfield.

Cox's tame header - odd. I felt he was trying to set it up across goal and it hung too close to Cerny.

A foot or so back and an aggressive striker may have got something from that.

Yep, perhaps should have scored, just seen it on SSN. Didn't catch the game or highlights, but fantastic to see Pearce and Cox in the side (was Cox a sub?). 11 pages is a lot of reading - can someone summarise how they did?

Edit - looks like Cisse replaced Pearce in defence for the second half?

They did OK.

Fed - made a couple of good saves (was unlucky with the goal) - 7

Rosenior - reasonable at the back, good going forward, needs to learn to take throw-ins! - 7

Shorey - poor dead-ball delivery, completely rotten in CM for the 15 minutes he was there (too one-footed for a start). Capello must have wondered how Nicky ever won a cap. Quite sad, really - 5

Ingimarsson - he's going to be player of the season again, isn't he? - 8

Pearce - good, solid 45 mins as spare CB. Seems to read the game well. Sacrificed when the team went 4-4-2 (Cisse went into central defence) - 7

DLC - shackled Keane well, not much he could do for the goal. Deserves a start at LB - 7

Long - tried too hard to impress, wasted a lot of possession as a result - 5

Cisse - decent in CM (needs to up the energy a tad), a revelation at CB. Dare SC put him there against Man U? Not sure I would risk it! Hope he retains his CM place, though - 7

Harper - was James Harper, only slightly less so. Needs to step up when one of the senior players - 6.5

Cox - looked confident. Obviously told to keep things simple, and did so. A definite prospect - 7

Convey - an off day for Bobby. Nothing he tried came off - 5

Lita - battled away but flashed at his one half-decent opportunity. Like Long, trying too hard to do things which meant he seemed to be playing for himself at times - 6

One thing about Pearce....
Is it possible there is a footballer out there slower than Shorey & Gunnar? It seems there is.

Step forward Alex Pearce.

The way I saw it was 5-4-1 with a twist. DLC was man-marking Keane, Pearce was picking up Defoe and Shorey and Rosenior marking Boetang and Malbranc respetively. I think Cisse was also supposed to be marking Jenas too. That meant that we had 5 men purely defending and being dragged where ever their man went. We had no shape and didn't know what to do when we eventually got the ball.

We had no intent on stamping our authority on that first half and as someone else said it seemed more like a dress rehersal for the Utd game as opposed to us trying to win the game.

Second half was so much better. We looked like a team that actually wanted to take part in a football match as opposed to a training exercise.

The biggest shame is that this defeat has cost us the chance of a trip to Old Trafford and our cut of the gate receipts. That would probably equate to about £1.5 million and enough to pay a new player £25k a week.

Not to mention the effect our approach to the Cup has on our reputation within the rest of the football world. It's hardly going to help us attract the quality of players we're supposedly already struggling to persuade to join the club.

What I find amazing is how many people make judgements from what they hear on the radio.

You expect them to instead make judgements from what people say on Hobnob who may or may not have been to the game and be reliable?

I'll usually mention my opinion is based on radio coverage somewhere, then people can make up their mind whether to trust what I'm saying. It's not as good as being there or watching on the TV, but it's the best I can do most the time and I don't see why I shouldn't be able to comment on a game just because I was only listening in.

I'd expect people to not pass judgement without seeing things with their own eyes, preferably in the flesh.

Even if you do caveat your opinion with the fact you only listened to the game, you can't really blame someone for making comments about how valid they considering the lack of grounding they have.
