Table Since September 17th...

"We had a tough summer as everybody knows and I keep banging on about it, but that is what happened.

"We lost the play-off final, we lost players, we had to replace them and we had to find another way and we've done that."

"Apart from the first six games of the season, we would be winning this league by a long way."

Obvious statement is obvious.

Shame all games are worth three points, eh Brian?

Jay Tabb

I love this guy. A great CLUB man.

Took a look at his stats

He has only appeared on the losing team once
the unlucky 0-1 home to Hull City

He has started 9 Games W7 D1 L1 2.44 ppg

He has been a sub 8 times W7 D1 2.75 ppg

Overall he's P17 W14 D2 L1 2.59 ppg

When Tabb has started we've done better than when he hasn't played
When Tabb has appeared as a sub we've done better than when he hasn't played
When Tabb has started or been a sub we've done better than when he hasn't played.

I thought perhaps it was because he didn't play at all in Games 1-6 so I tried it without those games

He still comes out very very well

Table Since September 17th.

The Season nears its close.

It's fantastic to see us 3 points clear with three games to go, but it might be time to reflect
that in a few ways we caught a good wind and everything has fallen our way.

IMO West Ham DO have better players AND (they show it away from home) can play brilliantly as a team
Luckily for us their fans and their playing-at-home nerves have served in our favour.

Birmingham have good players and are extremely capable on their day, but lucky-for-us they were in Europe.
had they mot been, they would have been a lot closer to the top.

Cardiff have a very good team, good individuals, a sharp manager, and beat us twice (deservedly)
Again, we got lucky and they had a cup run which made their season stutter.

Southampton, good players, good team, good manager. We probably just about deserved to win
at St Mary's but I doubt anyone would have said a 2-2 draw would not have reflected the game.

Blackpool can be an exciting side and probably deserve to be in the POs (and I wouldn't want to play them!)

But overall, I think the top five shown here were all capable of genuinely challenging for the top spot, and while
I am thrilled we somehow caught them all and passed them, I continue to be amazed

How does the defence compare to previous successful seasons?

For much of the season we have really ground out wins, and winning runs which at their heart relied on clean sheets, although recently we have been banging in a few more goals. Our approach has been a strong defence, shielded by the excellent Legs and Karacan.

Historically has this been our approach in our promotion winning seasons or have we had a more Blackpool-esque (high scoring/high conceding) approach?

0.86 conceded/game is great.

Just noticed how interesting it also is at the bottom of the table

Coventry have a better GD than Bristol so have to gain 4 points on them

They may go into the last game needing a point at Saints

Coventry v Millwall
Coventry v Doncaster
Saints v Coventry

Bristol City v West Ham
Bristol City v Barnsley
Burnley v Bristol City

If the second best away team in the league win at Bristol and Coventry manage to beat Millwall
it starts to get very interesting. I have this feeling Southampton might yet end up third.

Theoretically Coventry should get 6 points from their last 3, which basically means Bristol would need to win won of their remaining games so my money would still be on BC to make it.

But as we all know anything can happen at this stage of the season, e.g if we lost to Forest (and given our miserable home record against them and their current form that is possible) then we'll quite probably be back to second and have the Hammers closing in which will quite definitely pile the pressure onto the last two games.
