Royals and Racers Latest Winchester City 5 Reading 0
29, 30, 35, 48 and 50 mins.
6-0 71 mins
8-0 82, 84 mins
F-T 8-0
I will post the updated table when Sholing v Selsey finishes. Badshot Lea v Ascot was postponed.
Sholing 2 Selsey 1 - Sholing 1 down at HT won it with goals on 90 + 7 and 90 + 9
Table
8th Reading P 11 points 3 GD — 39
9th Selsey P 12 points 2 GD — 26
10th Badshot Lea P 12 points 2 GD — 31

Based on how results have been going, it seems whether Reading stay up or not will come down to results against the other teams in the bottom four, there appears to be a severe gulf in class beyond that.

Bottom 3 only- Badshot Lea have played Selsey twice( drew each match, hence the 2 points they both have.
We have to play Badshot Lea twice and Selsey away.

So save any unexpected points from other games, drawing all 3 of those games should be enough?

The misery continues. Our daughter played for some poor teams on occasions but none had to endure runs quite as appalling as those that the Reading Women's team are on. Heartbreaking too for all those, like our daughter, who were fortunate enough to experience playing during some of the good times under Kelly Chambers and co.

There through the acts of Dai, Pang and Howe, could be the men's set up in a few years time.

It is currently, to all intents and purposes, a schoolgirl team playing adult football. Results are showing that. For a team that had zero pre-season, troubles with availability (and recently illness), this season hasn't been a surprise.

However. Outwith the second half against Winchester, i can't remember the heads dropping at any stage. They are competitive in games for an hour or so, before their age/fitness starts to show against adults. There's been no bickering, or blaming each other - I would struggle to remember a team on a run of results like theirs who haven't imploded in terms of team spirit and discipline.

All along, it's been clear that the season boils down to the games against Badshot Lea and Selsey. We've already beaten one of those. Two wins guarantees them safety, I think one would probably do so.

As much as Dai, Nigel (Rob...?) etc should rightly be blamed for what they've done to the women's programme, equally Emma, Dave, Pedro etc should be lauded for just keeping the team alive, and keeping going this season under the most ludicrously trying of circumstances.

An interesting assessment thanks. I didn't realise the players were that young. I know the captain who jumped ship was older and very experienced and had assumed they'd manage to sign other older, experienced players too. Perhaps naively I had hoped that the name/badge would attract some.

'Availability' always bugs me though. For us and our kids commitment to team and teammates always came first above social life, family events, holidays (planned around fixtures) and school work (done outside of training/match times). They did, however, benefit from the way their playing 'careers' progressed. However, perhaps that was stupid and it's unrealistic to expect others to do the same.

And yes, full plaudits to the management and coaching team who have managed to keep things going despite everything that has been thrown at them.

I'm afraid, for me, that's not just unrealistic but undesirable. At least with boys there's a faint hope that they may be able to make a decent living from sport. With girls, with finances as they are, it's a shot in a million. Education, education, education. Sorry!

Education still came above their football, it was just a question of time management and planning. Both ended up with very good degrees and careers, despite their commitment to their football teams.

Re girls and future in game: Dream came true playing for Reading, very good degree completely free of any debt in the US (there's the education, education, education.) whilst playing football. Now making a very nice living through football. Somewhat less than a shot in a million.

Big money is now starting to go into the US women's leagues too, So IMO neither unrealistic nor undesirable. What's more the opportunities have grown tremendously over the past decade and are likely to continue to do so.

So, just like boys, if any girls have that big dream, I would say 'go for it'! But still make sure you do your homework and study hard at school and beyond!

R&R - do you have the address of the Selsey pitch? I am now living just a few miles from there, so might pop along next Sunday.
