This is a bit like when Coppell let Forster and Williams both leave. Everyone was a bit sceptical at the time. But he replaced them with Doyle, Long and Sonko and the rest is history.

Letting go of a few of the fans favourites and long-serving players is probably exactly what we need at the present time to break out of our current rut, change the whole philosophy at the club and come out stronger.

Without money, nobody thought that Coppell could replace Williams and Forsters quality at the time. But hell he did it. (I sound like Ed Milliband there).

I reckon Clarke will unearth the next Doyle, Long and Sonko without spending much. Come on Clarke, show us what a great manager you're gonna be for us. Lack of funds. That is no excuse.

Might as well have left it to Get Reading or Charles Watts to tell us the news - not even a quote from anyone at the club saying they were sad to see him go, or the usual drivel that we're even looking to bring someone in.

Your use of the rolling eyes emoticon is prolific! You're going to end up with Vertigo or something.

Anyway, Pearce is a solid Championship defender on a Premier League type of wage and that's just not going to work for us at the moment. Thanks for the memories Pearce, hope you've made the right choice.

It's not 'might as well' it's absolutely true. They've confirmed staff departures, player departures, contract updates and pre-season news days or even weeks before the club inconvenience themselves to tell us

SC and NH must be on a beach somewhere twiddling their thumbs while the owners' advisors discuss a date for deciding a date for deciding a date to decide what the transfer budget is

The best thing about Pearce's departure is that we will now have to come up with a new corner set-piece routine.
Knocking it to Pearce on the back post was just so predictable.
Maybe we will try knocking it to Cooper / Hector on the back post instead.

Oh Christ I forgot about that, every cloud does have a silver lining.

I for one am a bit gutted about this. Good luck at Derby Pearce.

Lets be honest he was never adored by the fans - poor sod didn't even get a song which for a club captain is shameful.

If we were remotely close to what Derby were offering he'd have stayed.

I've always been a big fan of Pearce so I'm sorry to see him go.

I am glad we stuck to our principles and didn't offer him a bumper pay rise to stay. Equally, I'm disappointed we might have given him a bigger deal than was necessary two years ago.

I think this is a year too soon for Hector to be our senior centre back, for Cooper to play regularly, or for any of our other youngsters to be third choice, so hopefully we see at least one senior centre back come in on a short-term deal.

We have a big summer ahead of us now finding replacements who can do the job

This really isn't true though is it?

He only stayed two years ago because we offered him a contract on wages twice what he's worth.

Don't let the chest-pumping fool you, Pearce is a clever bloke and he follows the money as much as any footballer

Of course he follows the money. Doesn't mean I want to see him go though. He has been a great servant for us. One of the few I actually wanted us to keep.

What worries me is that they've not offered anything to Mackie yet. Fans favourite & you'd think that could be a deal that gets wrapped up quickly - I think Mackie would very much like to stay with us.

I smell trouble & not much transfer activity. It's all feeling a bit sh1t really isn't it?! I'll reserve judgement until end of July though as it's still bloody early.

Hendo I am guessing it was a bit of a quote fail.

It was "a something fail". I tried to highlight my agreement with much of the original post but go on to make a nifty alteration that I believe to be more accurate.

Clearly I failed!

maffff Happy days.

We'll see.

Somehow I doubt it though.

Can't see us splashing out and replacing him with someone better.

Without re-quoting him, I basically share Monster M's sentiments.

Like him, I fear the worst I terms of us not spending. In which case we're going to get weaker and weaker as we sell our better/best players.

There may well be trouble ahead but the club can't officially offer Mackie anything because he's a Forest player and we have to agree a deal with them first!

I'm sure the club know exactly what it will take to get Mackie to sign though, and they may well have a deal agreed in principle with him pending negotiations with Forest, but we as fans wouldn't really get a sniff of that until it was all official between the clubs anyway.

I'm not convinced we're going to be giving Clarke the tools to do the job but the doom-mongering about not hearing this or that, or because we've lost a couple of good players (who I'd rather we kept to be honest) due to wages and Premier League chances, is frankly a little bit far fetched at the moment.

I find it unlikely you could possibly know that.

As I'd expect him too, as you say, he's not stupid. That doesn't devalue what he's contributed and how much he clearly felt about the club though. We were no longer willing / able to meet his financial expectations, nor his performance ones. That says more about how the club's fallen than him though.

Didn't say it devalued what he did here, just that the idea he'd have stayed here no matter what if we'd offered him a bit more money is a little daft.

Derby are a club with more history, a bigger fanbase, and lets be honest a considerably better chance of getting promoted next season. I highly doubt money was the sole motivating factor behind this move.

Yeah, I'll buy them apples.

I'm not advocating paying him a fortune... I just don't get the sense that we really made any effort to keep him, and probably offered him a contract significantly below his worth, rather than at it. And it's troubling times because we already need major reinforcement and all we've actually done is got weaker.
