Hoop Blah
You can never put too much weight on what footballer and their managers say in public, but denying the existance of the hangover at the time was pretty obviously a bit of spin to try and paper over the cracks.

That they've sinced admitted that there was one probably means that they felt it and tried to address it at the time.

How much effect it had I don't think you can guess. I think the loss of certain players and leaving the incoming transfers so late in the day, thus wasting the majority of pre-season, was probably a bigger factor.

Can't disagree with that final point Hoop but it's interesting that the two big fails of McD's transfer dealings were probably Williams and Khumalo. Both of whom were brought into the club in the close season, both were bought to be 1st team starters yet both were deemed so poor that they were effectively replaced by signings made at the end of the same window who went on to make a huge contribution to our success.

I think it also goes back to a point you made on another thread about the players we've been most strongly linked with so far, mainly Marriappa and MacLeary, not fulfilling a need we might have for players of Premiership experience. I think it's more likely that it needs a couple of moves within the Premiership transfer merry-go-round before we'll be able to get those type of players here. Of course being in the top tier now makes our job a little easier but it's still a fair bet that to get the players that might be at the top of our shopping list we may have to be a little more patient and the Premiership season still hasn't finished yet.

Also the set up and ethos set up around the club means that experienced players seem to able to settle in pretty seemlessly. Certainly Gorkss,Roberts and Connolly all hit the ground running.

Interesting point on Williams and Khumalo. Obviously not all signings can come off, but they were spectacular failures.

Total agree on the point that we have to wait for the market to come alive before we're likely to see the experienced players moving around. I'm not worried by that yet as obviously it's very early days.

- Managing to lose even when playing well
- Losing key players
- New players struggling to fit in

I think these are among the things people mean when they talk about a "playoff hangover," rather than simply players playing poorly because of disappointment or disaffectation. The key point is the club didn't start the season in the best possible shape, and that was caused at least in part by having to find the best mix of players having lost 2 and brought some more in, and possibly players playing with a lack of confidence, both of which would obviously have the playoff defeat as their proximate cause.

Also LOL @ Snowball's "was fighting back from 2-0 down in the first game caused by the hangover?" Clearly a 2-2 draw at home to Millwall was us below our best, however we earned the point.

Were we the only side in the league with new players then?

Wimb
Extended-Phenotype Popped into the Snowball dungeon to say hello to the inmate and ask Statto a riddle that interests me…

In your close examination of games, can you tell me how many points that one could say Harte ‘lost’ Reading this season, and how many points you could argue Harte ‘won’?

I.e. a costly mistake leading to a goal in which Reading lost or drew the game VS a goal Harte scored or setup that lead to Reading winning or drawing.

I just thought it would be interesting to appreciate in ballpark terms whether we gain more from Harte’s skill than we lose from his pace.

My pre-conceived notion is we gain more than we lose.

I can't remember too many Harte 'errors' the only ones that come to mind are failing to close down the guy at Hull and also being hilariously outpaced at Peterborough.

There was one dreadful back pass. Cant remember the game, just remember the pass. I think I gently got to my feet and said words to the effect of that was a little below your best old chap

Maguire Actually agree with Snowball that it's just being wise after the event.

McDermott's also said he'd never have admitted it during the season... it would have been unprofessional to do so IMO.

cmonurz If we didn't have a Wembley hangover, maybe it was wrong to exclude those 6 games from your analysis.

( )

Wink-Wink, to you, mate, but I'm on record as saying we were a shambles, players
out, new ones in, Khumalo-Disaster etc... but I've only been saying that for six
months or so TBF

Snowball McDermott ALSO said we didn't (before he said we did)
and it was easy to say we did, after the fact, when the corner
had been turned etc etc.

He also said that he didnt think we were going through a Hangover from the playoffs but with hindsight and looking back on it he believes we did..[/quo

DUH!

Easy to be wise after the event and make up a story that fits.

But you can go and look at actual facts like players out, injuries etc
that have nothing to do with hangovers.

But he's only played in 14 games: let's take a look when he's played more games and the stats will be a bit more credible. Would be very nice if they stayed the same!
Btw, how on earth did you come up with those player values?

I think we should put in a cheeky bid for Torres, a snip at £4m.
