I saw this yesterday on The Secret Footballer's website. Having read it, it so reminded me of Pearce, even down to the wage figure p/w being the same as quoted elsewhere

http://www.thesecretfootballer.com/articles/12802/agents-stricken-by-delusions-of-grandeur-2/

Given that it is way too early to say what is going to happen to Pearce, it would be interesting if no PL clubs came in for him. What would his options be then? Not as if he can say 'well I love the club and I'm excited to stay' is it?

Some desperate bottom end PL club will have him. Don't worry.

Agree sounds just like he's talking about him - however, unfortunately there are probably many others in a similar position; our Pearcy is not unique after all.

But I suspect that if he does stay it will be in him and the club's interest to make it sound like he always wanted to stay ..... doubt he'll be offered anywhere near £25k though now mind.

A source close to the player (his agent?) has been quoted in the Shields Gazette today and this is what they said:

“I do think Alex would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle,” “He’s in a fantastic position, and there’s a number of clubs monitoring him.” “Newcastle would be a club that would interest him.”

“He’s a leader, and a player that Reading groomed to be captain.” “He’s a vocal player and isn’t afraid of telling people if they’re not doing their jobs.” “He leads from the back, pushes the defense up, and gives 100% in training and games.”

“He’s not in any rush and a lot of clubs aren’t in any rush either. He’s got himself into this position and the next move has to be right for him on football grounds.”

“Premier League football is something that once you’ve had a taste of it, you don’t want to let it go, but at the moment we’re still in touch with Reading.”

“He came through the Academy there, but if they want to bring players in and pay them more than the lads who came through the Academy, there is a decision to make.”

Alan Pardew has said he would like to sign players with Premier League experience, and in addition we are short of leaders on the pitch, so if Alex is good enough, he would seem to be a decent signing as a free agent.

I think it will be one hell of a job to manage to convince anybody that Pearce actually wanted to stay here after this. Not sure how much of the badge kissing and all that I would believe if he stayed. We will never know if anybody had come in for him or not but there would always be the suspicion it was money/no offers that kept him here.

At least the agent talk confirms that Pearce threw a wobbly because players (Pog I would imagine) were being paid more than him.

pog was on a free, so got extra money we would have spent on transfer in his wages.
pearce isnt even our best defender, let alone our best player, & able to demand parity with anyone

I don't really think that Pearce would ever have been offered parity with The Pog. The Pog was an established international with appropriate intl and top league football experience (whatever way you may feel now!!), his salary would have been based on that, as well as being a free transfer. He would not have been offered anything like parity unless he was an unexceptional talent that the club didn't want to see go anywhere (potential shades of Alex McCarthy's next contract discussion?) so if his agent was whispering in his ear then he could have done him a dis-service. Of course, without us knowing exactly what terms Pearce WAS offered, a lot of this will always be guesswork.

That just sounds like he has zero offers on the table in the premier league and his agent has messed this up.

It does sound like his agent is trying to drum up interest in him 'Oooo I've got lots of other clubs interested.........' Final thing now would be for them to go back to Reading FC and say 'Can we discuss the £25k a week contract?', to be told 'Oh you mean the £10k a week contract. We've had to cut our cloth you see.......'

Agree with zac.

Norrers, more likely to be an issue if maps came in on more. Can't see him comparing his wage to a russian international with pl and european experience.

I was going to make a comment about not being Jerry McGuire, but then I noticed his experience of being a 'Close Protection Operative' (e.g. bodyguard), so I guess I should say he's no Kevin Costner is he?

Bodyguard cum Sports Agent? Seriously?? You can't make this s*** up! 'Sorry Alex, I've had to put your contract talks on hold at the moment as I am providing close protection to J-Lo's left arse cheek.'

Pearce's mate “I do think Alex would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle,” “He’s in a fantastic position, and there’s a number of clubs monitoring him.” “Newcastle would be a club that would interest him.”

I am presuming that his agent has bugger all to do at the moment if he has the time to sign in to forums and big up his man. As far as I am aware football isn't a democracy so I'm not really sure what value this would bring to anything?
