I didn't think yesterday's was a penalty but why is it that MOTD don't discuss OUR penalty claims in their post match reviews? This is the second time in succession that this has happened.

Man Friday It wasn't just the substitution, it was a change in shape, too, at least when Alf came on. Blackman was out wide with just Alf up front and Jobi just behind. With that, we lost the ability to pressure their goal at all and we're holding on by the end.

We came under all that pressure because of Morrisons injury meaning we couldn't defend effectively. Nothing more to it.
Why didn't we replace him then?
Carrico, Blackman and Le Fondre

:| I hope I'm due a whooshing, but it's hard to replace someone when you've used all three subs already.

How many days ago was I being told by the same people now saying "If not for McCarthy" that the keeps was an important player?

The score line would suggest that we were able to defend effectively

Perhaps not AS effectively; but we were still effective

The defending was ineffective. The goalkeeping was excellent.

And there was I thinking goalkeeping was part of our defence... Doh!

If McCarthy hadn't had such an outstanding game, and Liverpool had banged in the three or four goals they'd probably have got on another day, would people still have been praising the performance so much?

We showed promise with some passing, and the commitment was pleasing, but we were still cut to shreds at the back by a team playing poorly, while having very few decent chances ourselves.

Sorry, that's ridiculous. The goalkeeper did his job. It's not an IF, it's a fact. That's what he's there to do. When there's positives, other positives are there to be made.

Most of us are under no illusions, we know what COULD have happened yesterday, in most games this season we have been outclassed, all we look for are a few chinks of light at the end of a very long tunnel, IMO we saw a few , more effort, getting in the faces of the opposition. and most of all trying to pass the ball, which admittedly didn`t come off that often, it is work in progress, and even if we had lost 4-0 I would have felt the same way.

A fair point and should be treated as such. I took from the game that we are trying to pass the ball and not sitting back but getting in the faces of the opposition when we dont have the ball.
Guthrie is alot better with quality around him.
McAnuff putting everything into it even though we are practically down (the mark of a good captain).
McCarthy is the best keeper since Lev Yashin.
And that I love Carrico.

Well for a start McCarthy was the main positive people have been taking. Seeing Carrico get through 30+ minutes impressively was alright though. As was the way we were trying to play, even if we didn't do it very well most of the time. And we forced two very good saves out of Reina. Considering we've gone through more than one game this season without even registering a single shot on target, that's not too bad considering we got a battering in quite large patches of the game.

If you're going to start trying to say what might have happened if McCarthy hadn't been on fire, then I'll say they wouldn't have needed to keep trying so hard to score, so they wouldn't have created as many good chances, and so wouldn't have been likely to score three or four. Plus of course, I could say but for Reina, on another day, we'd have had one or two.

MOTD pundits always find things to discuss. Except when it might be a decision against us.

I was saying almost exactly that during the game, and again when it was 0-0 at HT.

I still expected a 0-3 defeat.

But yes, there are MANY positives to take from the game.

1. Guthrie is class and if we keep him he'll OWN the Championship.

2. McCarthy was utterly brilliant and surely is our Number 1 now, doubt gone
(and even if he goes he'll earn us money and be further proof of our Academy)

3. Gunter is a lot better than his detractors have been saying and will get better
as he gains confidence and maturity. His goal-line clearance was great.

4. The team tried to pass and even when it went wrong (Adkins said it would go wrong)
the team didn't drop their heads. HT worked and we fought well second half.

5. McCleary looks like he could be special and can work with Gunter

6. Carrico looks likely to be a star, and right now, we have two Prem-quality midfielders for the Championship

7. Not only did our keeper make great stops, so did Guthrie and Marriappa at least, evidence of HEART.

Yeah great point PP, that's really added something.

Snowball is right to highlight it, we've seen precious little of those two playing together, it's good to see the partnership looking good in Reading shirts, not Forest.

you also insanely suggested that a keeper doing what hes supposed to have and stopping the ball going into the net alot, is all luck and doesnt count towards whether a team "should" win or not
so its no wonder everyone ignored you

i cant really remember, but what did mcleary do?
i saw one really decent break, and pretty much achieved no end product all game
didnt really notice them being any better or worse than anyone
that may just be because i was ignoring that side cos kebe wasnt playing.

Can't say I saw McCleary do a lot I was impressed with. I recall him dithering around the box with the ball and then giving Karacan a hospital pass to try and shoot with. And walking straight into a challenge and losing the ball. I wouldn't have said he had a particularly bad game though. I though McAnuff was more involved, got in more dangerous positions and threatened the goal more. Although he also made his fair share of mistakes - turning into trouble, going down in the box etc.
