The potential he showed when at Feyenoord in 06/07 when he was arguably their best player that season, certainly their equivalent of our Jordan Obita this year (along with Georginho Wijnaldum), then the Dutch U21 player that was a first choice full back in the 2007 U21 European Chhampionship winning side, and the ability to seal a multi-million euro move to Real Madrid. He may not have been up to their standard, ultimately we'll never know if he really was because he p*ssed his opportunity up the wall there.

Care for more detail? Ok, I saw this man play for Feyenoord the day after our 3-1 win at Bolton in April 2007. Ok, it was only one game, but he was the standout player for me at left back in a team that included Wijnaldum, Vlaar, De Guzman and Van Hooijdonk. I watched the same man on the tellybox in the Dutch U21's that same year, he was the standout player again. Sadly, you can have all the ability in the world but if you don't apply yourself and allow the hype to go to your head then you'll never make it at elite level. He clearly has ability mate. He just doesn't have the attitude or application to complement it.

No, I imagine he will blame everyone else.... however, unlike our last big unfulfilled talent, James Lambert, He's at least picked up decent money along the way so that will keep him in the party lifestyle a little longer.

This is the problem I have with completely shunning him, when we don't find a buyer we're stuck with a player we effectively can't use down to the way we treated him. Seems ridiculous, unless they have a buyer lined up. Which they don't.

We don't know what he's like. If some of rumours are true and he's missing training, drinking before games and having bust-ups with players and management i think it's fair enough. His presence may be toxic and more detrimental to the squad then being a bit thin on the ground.

Difference is that he could see that it worked under Brian but last season we were struggling to keep up with the play off chase and he still wasn't getting starts.

He wasn't getting starts because because his overall game didn't warrant it and he was always most effective coming off the bench, it's the same argument that was had about Le Fondre since about 3 months after he joined us, which is a different argument to the one being had about Drenthe, who has flattered to deceive and is, by all accounts, a disruptive influence.

Someone with some good contacts at RFC who has no reason to lie recently told me what contract he understands Drenthe to be on. I was pretty staggered. it was an eye watering amount for a club like us to pay.

They could have ended his contract earlier than this if they'd wanted to. There have always been "problem" players - sometimes, they just need a little guidance from their manager, someone to watch over them and ensure they don't get into trouble outside of the game. We failed to do that with Royston and with a bit of nurturing and care, he may have turned out to be the player for us that we all hoped for, and needed. I don't get these managers who freeze players out just because they dared to question them or whatever. Mind, the writing was on the wall when I got my R R Drenthe shirt - every time I decided to get a shirt with a player's name on, they leave. I'm getting a Swansea shirt with Sigurdsson on the back this season
