Fordham has blocked me on Twitter! Proves he definitely reads this forum. Obviously read my comment and gutted broke news before him!

Webster750 Press conference from Sky Sports News now on YouTube.

Having watched that again, the comments from AZ around budget don't clear anything up, do they? Admits the club made a mistake in not doing enough in January, but evasive about where the blame lay.

On the radio Williams asked him if McD could have done more in the January window and AZ replied with a stern "yes".......

Saints fan here, in peace.

I'm gutted that Nigel has joined as your manager, not for any personal feelings against your club but more for the fact that I don't think he'll be appreciated enough with your fanbase unless he works miracles. From scanning through this thread I can definitely sense a bit of ambivalence about his appointment, which isn't a good sign for me. Personally I think that NA is far superior as a manager to Brian McDermott, he inherited a good squad when he joined us in 2010 but he did really well to get us promoted from L1 after a shocking start to our season under Pardew. He quickly implemented a new, impressive style of play in a squad that had been very direct under the previous regime and it worked very well. We were unlucky not to win the league after a few slip-ups towards the end of the season, same goes for what happened last season imo.

He's a top, top bloke and very positive - unlike McDermott who I always found a bit shifty and gloomy in his interviews. He's got bags of catchphrases ("on the bus", "in the building", "hard-working group of professionals", "one game at a time", "draw a blue line under it" etc) and i'm sure he'll do well for you. Personally I think your chances of staying up this season are pretty slim, but I would be much more confident in your ability to go straight back up under Nigel than under McDermott or anyone else.

Give him some time, let him bed in and he will be great for you. I think you can tell from the reaction from us Saints fans when he got sacked how much he was loved by us at the club, and I wish that he was still with us as manager - that's progression for you though.

You know him, we don't.........you can see why some are reserved about the appointment considering we beat you to the title last season

But we are all willing to give him a shot and if he gets us back up, he'll be loved

@SuperMikey

Thanks for your comments.

Please be aware that in this forum there are a minority who will slight the club whatever it does, and in this case there are a sizable number of us who are uncomfortable about the sacking of McDermott, which colours the reaction to Adkins' appointment.

Despite the above I think it's fair to say that a large majority of posters here are pleased that Adkins has been appointed. In fact I'd say it's the most satisfaction I've seen over a managerial appointment in my time as a fan (16 years).

TBM "Should the manager have done more, in January?"

"Yes"

:o

Interesting!

Wonder how the Anton haters are going to spin that one to make it still look like it was all his fault? I think that was pretty clear.

tbf this is all stuff we know.

we had big funds available for the right players in january(summer dealings aside) but couldnt get them to sign.
i dont really see that as being wholly down to the manager.
the players who are worth 10Million plus are naturally going to be a bit reticent about coming to a new prem club at the bottom of the league, naturally

Overall I am not particularly excited by this but then I still wish very much that Brian was here so I think anyone taking over would not have done much for me. As he is gone then I guess NA sits in a group of people that are not a huge risk and have a fairly good record so don't think he is a bad choice.

TBM Adkins managed to get Gaston Ramirez for Southampton - so his targets are at least better than looking at League One

Got a feeling this was more down to Cortese and his Italian links than NA's pulling power as a manager.

very evasive and uncomfortable on budget in the summer, mumbling over the joint decision bit.
bit clearer in january, and it sounds like he would have preferred if brian had spent the money on a plan D, when A,B,C didnt come off

LOL @ far superior.

but i dont think we are ambivilent at all. i think adkins came out top of a recent poll of who we would like. i just think alot of us dont see that much difference between brian and nigel.but we'll be bang behind the bloke.
adkins spent more, and probably had better players over all,so really shouldnt have lost the championship to brian, and should be away from relegation danger. that said, i liked your style last season, and am hoping to see some of that here

Give him a chance. He'll do OK for you. He's a good organiserand motivator and brings more positives than negatives to a club. I wouldn't read too much into the speculation as to the circumstances of his departure from us or view that as a negative. He did superbly for us for over two seasons. I am pretty sure he knew his departure was pretty much on the cards. His odd reaction after the Coventry game on the last day of the season spoke volumes.
