ZacNaloen He isn't arguing that the goal shouldn't have stood, he's pointing out your interpretation of why it was given is plain wrong.

Yeah but as i keep telling him, the player wasn't offside on the original pass and the lino flagged once the deflection happened - as it came off the Reading player there is no way he could have given that as offside.

TBM tbh he's gone onto an American site......i mean "Soccer", wtf? - secondly the diagram he's drawn doesn't reflect the way Scunny scored their goal on Saturday so really my point still stands.

Until he can give me a valid reason why he thinks their goal shouldn't have stood, i'll continue to say the ref got it spot on.

Right even I'm getting bored of this now. I have no valid reason why the goal shouldn't have stood. I have never said it was offside.

I'll say it for the last time, my point is your flawed understanding of the offside law. You still seem to think that you cannot be offside if a ball is passed back. You are wrong.

I didn't draw the diagram, it's not supposed to reflect the way the goal was scored. I was answering your request to "find one that shows a pass backwards then taking a deflection forwards" which I have. If you believe that what I've quoted from the website under the diagram is wrong, please provide some evidence and here's a hint, don't go looking in the Laws of the Game because you won't find any evidence there.

Say the player was stood offside on the original pass and the passer decides to his the ball 50 yards back to his defence but after 40 yards it smacks the back of Longs head and then travels to the feet of the Scunny player (who was "offside") - you're saying that he should be flagged offside?

I've done a diagram, similar to the one you drew:

Unlikely scenario but yes, he should be flagged offside as he has gained advantage by being in an offside position. The length and direction of the pass is irrelevant.

I did not draw the diagram. If you followed the link I supplied you will see it was part of the question that was asked on the Web site.

Say, Long has a 50p head and heads it back and it falls to the player.........he's still offside, right?

It depends on the referees interpretation of whether Long had the ball "under control". If the referee decides that Long had the ball under control, then it is a new phase of play and the Scunthorpe player would be onside. If (as in your original question) it had hit the back of Long's head, then he would not have had the ball under control and the Scunthorpe player would be offside.

TBM Everyone around me was going mad about the "offside goal" but i knew it would be given - i explained to some bloke infront of me that it wasn't offside due to the fact the Reading player was the one who knocked the ball 'forward' to their man.......the initial cross was square/backwards so even if the matey was standing ahead of our defenders then he still wouldn't have been offside. Even after explaining this to him he proceeded to boo the ref at half time calling him a cheating pcunt :|

So you're now saying it wasn't a deflection and the Reading player had the ball under control. Well that's a new one I admit!
