Ian Royal hate it. Short corners very very rarely work. Stick the ball in the box, where there are bodies attacking it. That's how you score at corners.

even stranger to have someone go short, then ping it into the box anyway. i guess it takes one of their players away, but i wouldnt bother

Have you bothered to check how CRAP we are at long corners?

This season, we have only score 1 or 2 direct from a header from the corner. (I can only remember Mills at Leicester) and 2-3 others all from half-clearances from said corners.

That's from about THREE HUNDRED corners

With a conversion rate probably around 1 in 80
maybe it's time to try something new?

Possibly an argument for a better angle to whip one in curling away from the keeper, but that may be countered by the defence moving up quickly if they're any good.

or maybe not

From some nerdy guy's analysis of American games

Team..........CK..G....Pct.
Kansas City...46..2...0.043
San Jose......61..2...0.033
Dallas........65..2...0.031
Colorado......63..1...0.016
Los Angeles...66..1...0.015
New England...73..1...0.014
Chicago.......65..0...0.000
Columbus......43..0...0.000
DC United.....75..0...0.000
MetroStars....50..0...0.000
MLS TOTAL....607..9...0.015

So 1.5% compared with Royals 1.25%

This would explain why I never expect us to score from corners

I don't think it is really. I'm sure I can remember a season not that long ago where the team with the most goals direct from corners in the division, if not the whole league had only got 4.

Delivery has to be spot on, movement has to be spot on. It's a set piece which isn't from a great angle and the margin between great delivery and an easy head away or claim for the keeper is slim. There is little in the way of variation that can be tried. - in swinging, outswing, near post, far post, penalty spot, edge of area and short. Most of those there is little difference. The defence knows what is coming.

But it's an opportunity to test the keeper and the defence. To get a ball in the box to attack. An opportunity to win a penalty or get a goal mouth scramble, or to have the ball break right for you from a clearance and get another goal. And it's a way of sustaining pressure which can result in mistakes by the other team.

And I've very very rarely seen a good short corner that has come even close to providing a goal scoring chance.

We have scored 3 times with a clear direct header from a corner, twice in goalmouth scrambles after a corner, and twice from cleared corners being shot back in.

Really, IMO that's 5 successful corners.

We've taken 259. So really that's 1 every 52 corners.

IMO the other two aren't "from corners" but if you add them it's 1 in 43.

09 Scunthorpe
14 TORQUAY
05 Portsmouth Goalmouth scramble after corner
08 Forest
08 NORTHAMPTON Mills Header
05 Leicester Bullet header from Howard corner
09 Palace
06 Millwall
06 Middlesboro
22 Barnsley
06 Ipswich Corner pushed out to edge of box, Karacan shot, deflected in by Church
11 Preston Corner half-cleared, Karacan volley from outside box (25 yards)
14 Swansea
10 Bristol
05 Burnley
03 Doncaster
07 QPR
07 Cardiff
11 Norwich ball pinging around after corner, Harte stabs it home
08 Watford
07 Leeds
05 Coventry
09 Derby
04 Bristol
09 Hull
09 Swansea
04 Burnley Long bullet header
04 WBA
06 Doncaster
06 Hull
12 Stevenage
03 Cardiff
07 QPR

Wasn't Portmouth's goal against us from a short corner? There's 1 immediately

He didn't said he hadn't seen one, just very rarely.

How can you justify a method where the best team in the league gets FOUR goals in a season (if that's correct) when they probably had 400 corners over the 46-50 games?

How is it "testing the defence" if it's so easy to stop (396 saves from 400)

If these stats are widespread then it's about time managers started thinking of other ideas. For example, two players out by the flag and two between the edge of the box and the flag. Defenders have to cover them so that makes more space. Attackers have the chance to dink a cross, play 1-2s or win a penalty

Actually he said VERY, very rarely, and I can think of one off the top of my head without trawling through match reports, so there may well be more.

What we DO know is that corners are almost totally a waste of time. We had 22 against Barnsley and still didn't score.

I'm also more concerned with us, and historically a short corner or long throw have been pretty worthless for us. Which is why I hate the bloody useless things.

Hello...new to the board. :)

Representing the Connecticut chapter. Got turned onto the team by an on-line mate of mine. It kinda sucks being a fan in the States...I can only follow them on the MBM reports.

The last game against the fake hoops was probably the most frustrating game of the year. It wasn't that we didn't get the win, or even a point (games like that happen at times), it was the seeming lack of urgency/energy/focus. It sounds like they were flat. And for such a big fixture that was disappointment. Hopefully this weekend will see them return to the form that had saw them lose only once in league since early November. So, yes, it was a very disapponting result, I'm gutted in fact, but I am confident that we'll see a much more focused team come Saturday. I'll be very surprised if it is otherwise...I'm a "the glass is half filled" kinda person.

Anyhoo...it is nice to be able to come in from the cold (literally with the 5 feet of snow we've got here, lol) and go from lurker to contributor, and to make your acquaintances. 8)

LOL...well someone had to be the first, plus it is part of the rite of passage for any self-respecting message board. Having lurked here for a bit I know with my very subjective opinions it prolly won't be the last time someone says that to me here.

But, seriously, thanks for the welcome. 8)

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

I was wondering how Shane's fitness was after picking up a knock early in the aforementioned game but I saw he was in the line-up for Ireland's destruction of Wales yesterday. I would imagine that will make many here happy on a couple of different levels.

I don't want to dredge up the past, but didn't the mamoth statbore earlier season just indicate that we weren't far off the average for converting corners into goals.

Snowball, what was the outcome of your analysis at the time? How did we compare?

On the subject of corners, Mick Gooding made a interesting point some weeks back that maybe the reason Reading get so many is that the quality of the crossing is not accurate enough to avoid the first defender.

and that our shooting is too easily tipped round / over the woodwork, or deflected by defenders?
