Any nobbers playing for the uni?

I notice we have TWO triallists. Could be the boost to the 45 man squad that we need.

LOL @ pulling out of the combination league because of the assumed weakness of the opposition, then arranging a friendly against Reading Uni :|

You are kidding? The reserves playing against Reading University? That should be something of a mismatch.

My son has played at Combined Counties Premier level (step 5?) and also university and reckons the standard of the latter is inferior to the former by quite some way. No disrespect to the guys who play for Reading University but surely the club could have found higher level competition.

The club has close links with the university so this is just an extension of that.

2 goals already for Baseya and against top quality opposition. He has to start at Burnley.

Heh :) . This week Sibley Hall, next stop Liverpool.

Who else have we lined fixtures up against then? Earley Home Guard? The WRVS perhaps?

I wonder if the triallists were the two hitler youth lads that Iceland Stokie posted about before.

Slightly off topic but what a mess reserve team football has become. With due respect to Reading University, what on earth has McDermott learned about the two trialists against opposition of that level ?

What next ? Are we giving the Uni a chance for revenge in a game of University Challenge ?

It is also about fitness, not just playing against a certain level of opposition.

The club also has close links with some schools but it doesn't mean they are strong enough opposition to give the reserves a proper test. If Reading University is strong enough to do that then it really does put a big question mark against the quality(or lack of) of some of our squad players.

You don't add to your fitness running circles around low level opposition (they should already have that level of fitness that far into the season). The only people likely to build on their fitness will be the students who in all probability will not long ago have returned to 'pre-season training' and probably only train for a couple of hours twice a week. Thereagain if we are just going to hoof and chase perhaps that does help our fitness!

It's of no particular relevance, but I believe that the first ever match for the newly founded Reading FC in 1871 was against Reading School. Perhaps BMc is taking us back to our roots, from which new growth will spring. Another 140 years and we'll be on top of the Prem.

Maybe its not for our benefit and we're doing Reading Uni a favour to give them some tough opposition to test themselves against.

Maybe its a varsity charity match for the students, Exeter Uni did a similar thing, except the uni team faced an Exeter XI, which included some first teamers and some youth.

It's just a game of football, chill out a little peeps.
