Sutekh Bit more from Liam on the Brighton saga

Does seem absolutely daft that we would turn down a bid worth up to £15m for any player. £10m plus the add ons and we may not have even been in the situation we are now just from that transaction alone, let alone what it could have meant we'd have got for some of the other players like Swift.

One of the defence narratives trotted out for Dai is that he trusted the wrong people and did not personally make the bad decisions. Well Gourlay had agreed to sell here, and Dai kiboshed it. So the lost fee and subsequent ludicrous contract is on him. See also Loader to Wolves who we subsequently lost on a free. Believe a much smaller up front fee in that case, but plenty of achievable add ons.

At the time, the suggestion was the bid was £8m, Gourlay was pushing for £10m which brighton were reluctant to go for and then Dai torpedoed the whole thing. From memory.

If it really was £15m that one decision to say no and give a ludicrous contract has pretty much cost us £20m, a relegation and three points deductions. And ruined Moore's career. Thiugh noy his bank balance.

Dai is such a pcunt.

Yeah I always thought it was that we wanted £15m and essentially priced Brighton out of a move as they were only looking in the region of £8-10m. If it is true and it was up to £10m with the likely potential to rise to £15m, then that's just obscene. Yep, that very transaction, plus the savings ever since, may have probably meant we were not in the situation we have been.

I'm all for wanting to keep your best players, but seriously at what cost? Everyone has a price and, even then, I don't think anybody would be complaining at £10-15m for a Championship defender from a PL club. He had an excellent season before and at the time it would have been bad to lose him, but it's more than justifiable at that price, especially when our academy churns out some good players, you can easily pick up a PL loan for a quality player or you can just reinvest some of the transfer fee to pull in another player if needs be.

[J.J Adams] Breaking news: Sources with knowledge of the situation say a third CanMNT international will be joining the Vancouver Whitecaps, Junior Hoilett. Out of contract with Reading, he’ll join the Caps before the roster freeze Friday. Not DP/TAM, brings a ton of experience and offence.

Former Reading youth player Jordan Norris died earlier this week. Extremely nice bloke, give what you can.

No he wasn't, Sam Baldock was 29 when he joined Reading in 2018 and 32 when he left in 2021. He was born on 15 March 1989.

I am not sure what he’s done, but fans on Twitter are praising Gareth McCleary.

He's alluded to Dai being influenced by certain people who didn't have the best interests of the club at heart.

Nothing we didn't know already but it hasn't really come from someone who was on the inside until now.

What's the story on us losing him and other youngsters to City?

I thought EPPP put geographical restrictions on making teenagers uproot their life and move up north. Plus, we're category 1 so how are PL teams allowed simply to poach our brightest prospects? I don't think we released him, so did City give us a decent fee?

We weren't Cat 1 for a year or so until recently.

I wonder how Man City, with their infinite levels of funding and influence, managed to pull this one off. Can't think of another example of them getting around other rules designed to keep a level playing field...

Geographical restrictions were scrapped a long time ago.

Doesn't matter if you're another category 1 club. The City's of the world are able to take your best prospects at a minimal cost given their wealth. Even the money we got for Fletcher is a drop in the ocean for them.
