under the tin I have been involved in sales for most of my working life, and understand that sometimes the market needs stimulation. It's the reason for things like the January sales. You have to motivate people to part with even more of thier money, after they've spent too much on Christmas.
The shops do it for this reason.

I'm not asking for RFC to go out and sign Messi. I just want them, (and the party loyalists on here) to think about the concept that trading losses could also be soved by increased sales, not just reduced costs.

Send a signal out. Motivate the fan base, Motivate the corporates.
The slowly collapsing, self sufficient balloon isn't working.

If FA cup quarter finals and a playoff final don't motivate people, I can't see why spending 5 million on Mills would. People in Reading pay for Championship football and get good Championship football. That seems like a good deal to me. What's your evidence that self-sufficiency is a "slowly collapsing balloon"? More wishful thinking.

The Prisoner Apols if any of this mentioned elsewhere. 14 pages<<<<<<<<<<my attention span.

Feds has just re-tweeted Dominic Alderton (on here?) on his twitter thingy:

@Adamfederici85 ask millsy why he's leaving for a worse team?!

http://twitter.com/#!/Adamfederici85

People only re-tweet things they believe!!!!! Apparently a few of the players have re-tweeted the same thing.

Observations are:

Great money for the club (most of which we won't get to spend, but I'll hold judgment for now)
Why has he been kissing the arse of fans on his twitter feed? (he only created a new account a few weeks back)
Why go to Leicester?! (next season's Middlesborough of this season just gone, if you drift my catch)
Did Wolves really not have an extra few quid to match the deal?
Why come out with all that bull about being proud of being our captain and wanting to stay?!

All that said I am kind of non-plussed that he has gone. It is a top top fee for him. I am just surprised it wasn't to Stoke or Wolves. The fact that it is Leicester suggests that money talks and bullsh1t walks.......

Top post.....made me

Rofleading fans. Good luck Matt, you've joined a club who are really showing their ambition to reach the PL and where your obvious talent will hopefully be appreciated.

Those games did motivate people but they were the highlights. There was a lot of poor stuff before that and, despite finishing the season on a high, the floating support will be sceptical about ambition and our chances for next season given the transfer activity since then.

And where your even more obvious tantrums are likely to overshadow your talent and alienate you from supporters again!

What it does demonstrate, however; is a declaration of intent by that football club.

The only intent that they are declaring with this particular purchase is that they intend to over pay for reasonable but not that good players on the basis of their performances on TV in the big games.

That's your opinion, mate.
The point I was making was that those games are more likely to be sold out (even if on telly) as a consequence of that declaration of intent.
More seats sold + more corporate money = less requirement on quality player sales to balance the books.

I'm not sure the big money in football is really in selling a couple of thousand more seats and a few more corporate packages. It's in the TV money really isn't it?

So we up our average attendence from 17k to 19k by spending £5m on a new signing(s) and £2m on wages. Ticket price is £25 ish = £2.3m in. I think you need to go back to the drawing board mate.

It's called passion. Perhaps the Leicester fans won't groan when he's carrying out the managers instructions.

But then there is a weakness slap bang in the middle of your argument. 'It's in the TV money really isn't it' So what attracts the TV companies? Ambitious clubs with quality signings I suspect!

:?:
The TV money is agreed and split evenly between the clubs. That happens even in the PL and SPL.

That's a very different expression of passion to that displayed by the likes of Murty, Gooding and Parkinson.

Maybe we wouldn't need to bring in more players if we didn't sell all our assets? If we didn't sell Mills for £5million, and keeping him meant that more fans could see our ambition - we'd get more bums on seats and thus make more money? :|

Same applied to Siggy as well. Would we now be a Premiership team if he'd stayed?

No compensation whatsoever to the clubs that host the games?

Even if that is the case, no doubt income from advertising and sponsorship increases significantly the more a club appears on TV.

Likewise the profile of the club increases.

Parkinson was a thug. Ask Spencer Prior.

Don't be naive. He was a year away from being able to leave for nothing, and expressed a desire to leave. Getting £5m for him is astonishingly good business from Hammond.

And how would we keep Mills? By paying him more than the £25k a week someone just suggested he'll be getting at Leicester. Which is £1.3m, before you NI and other employer costs. And we would have the same squad as before, so where would these extra fans who weren't interested in this squad last season come from?

I was working on the impression the suggestion was we should splash some cash on new signings like Leicester and show people we've got ambition. You don't have to throw money around to prove you have ambition. Actually I take that back, it seems plenty of people equate only money spent on new signings with ambition.

And if Mills had more than a solitary brain cell he would have realised our fans were booing the manager's tactics and not him!

Good riddance to probabaly the worst captain we have ever had - poll anyone?

Strange signing by them. Looked a decent passing side at our place - he hasn't got the ability to bring the ball out of defence.

top top money if it is £5M - how much goes to Donny??

suggestion is 20%, no idea if accurate, which I think would make it about £700k.

Well a bit disappointed that the skip has left for another championship side, but as we all know Reading will no doubt use the money they have received wisely, and invest it into the team, we might have lost our first choice centre back pairing from the run in that propelled us into the play-offs last season, plus our other specialist centre back in Ingi, but i am sure our 2 remaing centre backs, regular sub Pearce and the previously unused, ex relegated, Swindon Town centre half Morrison, will provide adequate cover next year.
