howser There is a fair bit of talk up this end of Scotland that the Long deal is well advanced, also that it might be a player + cash arrangement with Anthony Stokes coming to us.

Even though he was their joint top scorer this year?

Yes please to Stokes. Better than a lot out there in our price range.

I wasn't saying I wouldn't like him here, you can't deny his record. But it would seem strange to get rid of a guy they know scores goals for them, especially only as makeweight in a deal for Long.

Wouldn't say Stokes scores that much for Celtic - Commons has scored as many from open play in the SPL as him this season, and he plays left wing and has only been there half a season! Stokes has a decent record in Scotland, but has struggled down here. I'd much rather have Ebanks-Blake if we're going down the part player exchange route.

That being said, going to Celtic would be a great move for Long. First team football, gets to score loads of goals and the chance to challenge for the title/play in Europe. Canny from Lennon as well, he seems to have worked out that good Championship players absolutely boss the SPL (Hooper, Commons).

I much prefer our players to move to a different league....always seems worse when you see them joining a premiership side as it could well have been us.

Shane Long has only just proven he's only just good enough at championship level.

I like the guy and want him to stay but if he goes I can't see him doing much at another club.

This is where any hope of him staying derives from, and the fact we've been relatively patient with him.

Big Ern
Royal Rother I'll be disappointed if there's a clause that will allow him to go to whoever he chooses for £4m and that (effectively) the buyer won't need to pay any more than that. If it was done like that as part of a deal that made sense to the club at the time then fair enough but I think in an open market he could fetch circa £7m.

+ 1

Completely agree. If then release clause is only £4m, then the club will be selling under his actual value and will have sold themselves a little short.

Don't forget that he agreed the new contract back around November time when he wasn't playing that great and couldn't buy a goal. Although the club recognised his value and potential it's only an extraordinary run of goals over the last 6 months that makes anyone think he could be worth more than £4-5m.

That price tag back in November would've had the majority of Reading fans salivating at the thought of getting rid of him for that kind of money.

Just a thought...

I presume a release clause means that the club can't refuse a player
talking to a club that meets the agreed minimum

That DOESN'T mean the player has to/will go to the first club who offers

Say Galatassaray offered the req amount and Shane didn't fancy it?

Then he wouldn't be sold to Galatasaray.

What it does mean (as has already been pointed out somewhere) is that we will only get the value of the release clause for him regardless of whether one clubs or 20 clubs come in for him. It'll then be up to Shane to choose (and agree terms with) the club he wants.

Technically... Shane could turn down all offers. So it's not guaranteed he will leave if he really wanted one more season with us.

I know we would all leave if the offers of fame and money were offered to us, but it certaintly doesnt mean he HAS to leave.

Sorry, maybe I should have been more clear for our resident spacko.

While it is 99.9999% likely he will leave the club this summer, if Long WANTS to stay, then he would be able to do so.

Pull the other one. Where did you read that?!

EDIT: I read it too

Feel a bit sad for Cork, who sold back their sell on clauses. It's good for us, but can't help but feel for the little guys.

Lazy journalism - Madejski is saying he rates him at £20 million - but he knows we won't get anywhere near that - if he didn't want to sell him - he'd have put £20 million as the get-out clause rather than the £4 million it is rumoured to be!!
