If I was to guess then I'd probably assume both Holmes and Yiadom would have signed on reduced terms knowing that there was a release clause in their contracts that allowed them a move at a cut price. I wouldn't be expecting them to be of significant value either, similar to Ince.

They are probably the only two I'd take as a Championship club anyway, whether they'd move abroad (Yiadom more likely than Holmes) is another matter though.

morganb From Dellor this morning: https://twitter.com/RFCLatest/status/16 ... 5937449984

There are thought to be others with relegation clauses in their contracts alongside Tom Ince and Naby Sarr.

Do we have any idea who these players might be on the list above and also who we are likely to lose via this route (as in good enough to be wanted by another team and actually want to leave)?

Presuming it's anyone who signed a deal last season. Luckily only Ince and Carroll are any good though!

Yep, I would work on the assumption that players only signed multi year deals if there was a clause in there allowing them to leave for free/set fee if we dropped. Am including players who extended as well in this.

Tbh I don't think the relegation clauses are that meaningful. I don't think anyone is going to get a better contact elsewhere.

I would suggest Naby Sarr begs to differ.

Anyone who signed a contract in the last 2 years probably.

So McIntyre, Holmes, Carroll etc.

I think most that signed a new deal last season (and probably the season before) would get a better deal in the Championship if that's where they end up moving. Tom Ince will be on far greater wages if/when he moves than what he's rumoured to be on here.

Exactly - the clause would have been their agents way of protecting future earnings - probably also a clause allowing renegotation if we had stayed up.

I meant that relegation clause or no clause, if players want to leave they will probably end up leaving. Sarr had to go to Qatar to get a better deal. Ince already has a nominal buy-out fee. And our squad will still be on championship wages next season (minus any possible contractual reduction).

Ah right I see now. I don't think many/any players who we signed last summer or renewed their contracts will be on Championship level wages, not even average ones, not according to reported figures anyway.

From the veiled wording here - seems that the club hadn't yet announced Sarr leaving because Sarr hadn't told the club he was going to leave - looks like the deal announcement came as a bit of a surprise and they are more than slightly pissed about it.

https://www.readingfc.co.uk/news/2023/j ... ddle-east/

Royals centre-back Naby Sarr is expected to trigger a relegation release clause in his contract to take up a new opportunity overseas.

Without any formal approach submitted to the club for the centre-half, Sarr was set to remain a registered player with the Royals whilst under contract with the club.

However the defender - who turns 30 this summer - is now expected to formally activate the contractual clause to allow him to leave RG2 and sign for Qatari side Almarkhiya.

Sarr put pen to paper on a contract with the Royals last summer and scored on debut at Millwall. After a three-month injury absence, he went on to make 23 starts across the course of our 2022-23 campaign.

Everyone at Reading Football Club would like to wish Naby well in his future career.

Yeah and hopefully will shush the Twitter clowns about the club not mentioning it. It’s not done yet

Hopefully it will put in a few grand to add to next seasons pot

As for release clauses, be amazed if Holmes doesn’t have one. Whether he’ll trigger it or not. Also suprised (pleasantly) if Carroll is still here in August

I think he has signed at the Qatari lot, just not given the official confirmation to the club - clearly a formality - maybe reading to much into the wording but the fact they mentioned no bid received would suggest he can walk for free.

Yet the Club and fans knew he'd left as he posted a photo of himself with his new shirt over 36 hours ago. No excuse for not acknowledging this sooner.

You can take that view but he is still a Reading player and in lieu of the official paperwork/acknowledgement then he remains so. From the tone of the wording, the club are annoyed and may well have spent time yesterday understanding any legal position given this has clearly been done in the "wrong" way. The wording has definitely been through solicitors.

£8.5k (our limit for last season) would be an average weekly wage for the kind of struggling Championship teams that might be interested in our squad. Even Luton paid less on average - it's only the parachute clubs and those gambling on promotion that pay significantly higher. And those clubs aren't coming anywhere near our players.

But we should and hopefully did have relegation pay cut clauses in the contracts, so whilst some will be on 8.5k now, from 1st July, it is likely to be more like 5k, so scope for a pay rise by moving to a lower end Champ side still.
