Sunderland were 14th after 10 games in 2006-07, and won the league. Fulham were 11th at the same stage in 2017-18, and were promoted via the playoffs in 3rd. Norwich City were 14th in League One at this stage in 2009-10 (the season they opened by losing 7-1 at home to Colchester), and won the division. And not quite the same, but in 2016-17, Sheffield United were 18th after six games, and top at Xmas.

Yep something crazy like 71 points from the last 90 available. No way would I expect this side to go on such a run but as it stands tonight, a win tomorrow takes us level on points with 6th. So if 6pts is the hit, then no reason to think that a play-off run is still possible.

Almost feels like the players know it is coming and are using that to drive them on.

For example, if we keep this form going and win the final 2 games before the break, we will be in the play-offs and possibly have a couple of point gap to 7th (or worst have a better GD) - whilst the deduction is the penalty, would the EFL accept that it truly is if a 6pt deduction only leaves us 4 or 5 points off a potential promotion place with 75% of the season to go?

Would they be more minded to give us the full 9 to make it look like we are truly getting punished?

Certainly something like this "they're all against us" is a gift to any manager trying to unite a team together - stright out of the Fergusson and Warnock playbooks.

Also, never forget that in 2006 we could have had a 15 point deduction and still been Champions, or a 25 point deduction and still been promoted.

Be pretty much required to be via POs. I can't think of an example either.

Mind you, wouldn't the 106ers have still been promoted even with biggest penalty issued ??? About 22 points to Luton wasn’t it... that would still put us on 84, 3 points clear of Watford.

Trying to squirm off it by citing technicalities such as spending on infrastructure that, as Dirk points out, doesn't fall under the remit of the rules is frankly embarassing.

Let's hope the EFL take into account how we haven't tried to take the pi$$ out of them so give us a reduced punishment, but we should show a bit of class by accepting whatever the deduction is that we do get given, not whinge about it, and then we get on with it.

Nearest were Southampton in L1 who had 10 points and finished 7th in 2009/10. 7pts behind 6th. Would have finished 5th without the deduction.

Arsenal did win the First Division in 90/91 with a 2 point deduction.

Will the EFL simply reach an agreement for the plan, and then hold us accountable in sticking to it? In such a case, we'd be allowed to manage contract negotiations and transfers without their involvement, but we'd need to stay within agreed budgets to avoid further punishment.

This would be far preferable to the soft embargo in recent years. We have half a team out of contract at the end of the season, and if we need EFL approval for every single renewal or replacement we'll probably reach August with only 10 senior players or so and relegation looking a real possibility. Better to agree a budget and let us face the consequences if we breach it.

I would hope that it would be along of the lines of:

We will only sign X players per season at a total wage of 10k pw on contracts no longer than 2 years. We intend to see a profit in transfer dealings over the next 3 years so only 50% of fees received will be used to purchase players.

I would hope that as the only way out of the FFP mess is to trade our way out we should be able to offer extensions to players either on similar or slightly increased terms, so that we have sellable assets i.e. would be great if we can offer Swift a 2 year deal but flog him if we don't go up for a fee far in excess of what we may get in January.

If it isn't sensible like that, then we are essentially looking at being massively tied with little way of trading out.

I'd expect that whatever is agreed, retaining Swift, or even giving him a new contract so that we can extract a fee, is out of reach given his current wage package and the level he's currently playing at.

But you look at somebody like Halilovic, who has an abundance of talent but who's career has stalled. If we offered him a longer term deal on slightly improved wages, you could see us generating a good fee for him in a couple of years. The likes of Laurent and Ejaria too.
