Scutterbucketz I met Pearce in Lola Lo's (still not quite sure what i was doing in there) last November and had a chat with him. He said then that he was making a stand on behalf of all the academy boys as he felt that Nicky Hammond didn't treat them with the same amount of respect as players who are bought in and this was reflected in the contracts and wages offered to them. It seemed he was on a bit of a crusade.

As he is one of our best players I don't see why he shouldn't be offered parity With other players in the team.

Yeh I heard the same thing, problem is that the reason that academy boys don't get paid much is that they haven't got the experience to warrant it yet. And it's not as if they are a cut above the players being brought in. They are definitely less experienced, and it's questionable if they are better than them.

Alex Pearce has played 100 fewer games than Mariappa. That's why he can't command the same sort of wage whilst being as good as him. Experience counts as much as ability.

Completely disagree that experience counts as much as ability.

Isn't that pretty much the case in any business though? Those that hang around forever at the same company, generally earn less than those who join from outside? That's been my experience, anyway.

Colin Cheeselog He was our player of the year one year ago and our team hasn't really improved since then, so I would say that he most certainly is one of our better players and deserves to be remunerated accordingly.

If you were your company’s highest performing employee and a significant factor behind the company’s success, yet new employees were brought in and paid more, and the attempt to retain you was to offer a salary still lower than those new employees, you may feel miffed and consider whether you would be treated more equitably with a different employer.

It’s a fundamental feature of Adams Equity Theory.

hes not our highest performing employee though. hes not even the highest performing employee in his position

if he can get that wage elsewhere, good luck to him. club are right to maintain some sort of sensible approach to this

Or maybe you'd like an equation E+A = W

And in some cases it's E+A+P = W but that's the fun more riskier side of the transfer business where potential is apparently tangible. It's a bit like Venture capitalism.

You may disagree but I'd say that in that equation Experience and Ability are worth the same. It's just the value of each that is changeable in the equation, and that will affect the outcome.

He was our highest performing member of playing staff at the time when new employees were brought in and paid more than him.

The player of the year vote is the most reliable indicator for consistent level of performance.

james harper. steven hunt.

player of the year award is voted for mostly on effort and apparent passion. pearce most certainly gained votes for exuberant celebrations, and coming through the academy, on top of coming through the disasterous rodgers era/losing the captaincy & some shaky performances to become a very solid defender at championship level.
Mfers voted for him just cos she loves him
all of those factors arent really to do with his actual contribution on the pitch tbf

In which case, what is the best indicator of highest performing player?

How would you rate Le Fondre's consistent performances then?

So the player of the season vote categorically does not provide the best indicator of who is the best performing player of the season, and to suggest that is does is hilarious, but you can't provide a tangible alternative for what does provide the best indicator?

Anywho, I believe Alex Pearce was our best performing player in 2011-12, the majority of fans voted him as player of the season, and I can empathise with his perception that it’s inequitable for the player of the year to receive substantially less salary then colleagues who haven’t reached as high a level of performance.

Mariappa was player of the season at Watford, and is more experienced, plus previously subject to premier league bids.

you only need look at the list of previous winners and look at other players in those years to see that its a terrible measure, for the reasons i already detailed.

a hardworking player who works his legs off will beat an arrogant languid player of greater ability and achievement every time.

You're right. In fact Pearce should be lobbying for Marriappa to earn more than he does, because Marriappa was voted player of the year for a team that finished 11th, whereas Pearce only got the award for the team that won the league.

Similarly Messi should have been demanding Barcelona pay Eric Abidal more than him, as Abidal is more experienced.
