sandman His "knowledge and background" come as a player. What's his knowledge as a manager?
Probably the same relevant experience as Pardew and McDermott when they took their first steps into management at Reading, but I guess they knew the club and the players.

JIM No one wants to answer the question Has he any money to play with, ?

Are you asking that question of the nobbers? How would the nobbers know the answer to that?

Only Tiger and Sasima, Nigel and John would know the answer to that question. Ask them.

"Nigel" pretty much answered that one on the radio this morning.

Basically that in the future the owners will likely need more investment from other sources to achieve the things they want to achieve..

One wonders whether there was any truth in the interest of Monaco's Russian - Dmitry Rybolovev(?) - for the additional shares that Tiger had to buy...

Ian Royal
Sutekh Getting a load of whining supporters on BBC Berks saying it's a crap appointment as he has no experience. So just like Mark McGhee, Brian McDermott and Alan Pardew then

FFS shut up and get behind the him, it has as much chance of working as hiring anyone else.

Ffs i keep seeing this bollocks. It's nothing like McGhee, Pardew or McDermott. They may have had a similar amount of experience at managing, but they were all internal appointments who already knew the club and the level we were playing at.

Stam doesn't know the club and he doesn't know the Championship. An external appointment from a foreign league is completely different.

The closest comparison is Bullivant.

Disagree. McGhee didn't know the club when he joined. McGhee did not know Division 3. If Jaap can rebuild Reading's playing side like McGhee did then we can't ask for more.

And, as I have said, knowing the club and the way it has been run previously is utterly irrelevant given all the recent upheaval and changes.

Agreed that I'd rather have seen an experienced Championship/Division 2 level manager come in but that hasn't happened so let's see the positives about Jaap and run with those rather than trying to use the appointment to beat the club and board up further.

How do you know Stam doesn't know the Championship ?
It's not like loads of games aren't shown on the TV, or that he's got no connections in this country, or has never played English football.
Stam seems to have as much hands on experience in the Championship as Steve Clarke did, and I don't recall that being used as An argument against Clarke.
Stam clearly has a wealth of footballing experience, played under lots of top coaches, been involved in one of the top coaching set ups in the world. Whether he can use all that knowledge to deliver better performances and results than apparently better suited managers like Atkins, Clarke and McDermott we can only tell once the season is underway, although his summer squad building will possibly give us hints.

Watching some games on the telly is different to having knowledge of the league and what it takes to succeed in it.

Stam's former team mate would still be in a job at Valencia if watching on the telly was the same as the knowledge required as a manager.

Obviously.
But not mutually exclusive . You can get that knowledge in different ways.
We've had managers with relevant experience fail to repeat it, we've had managers with little or no relevant experience be successful.
There seems an assumption by some that there is one way to do well in this league and that Stam is not equipped to succeed. However If he has the right character, good coaching ability, a clear plan, respect of his players and a decent squad then he's got more than half a chance. He's not coming from Mars, he'll understand the league we play in.

Did Neville fail because he didn't know Spanish football, or because he's not a good coach, wasn't able to communicate with his players, wasn't committed to the job, had no connection to the country or any one of a number of reasons.
Stam has a much stronger connection with English football than Neville ever had with Spanish football and I'd suggest an inexperienced English coach would need to be absolutely exceptional to succeed in La Liga.

Jaap (first name terms) has said he has a good knowledge of the Championship.

Not ideal with the revolving door of managers, but this guy is well connected and has played at the highest level.

I reserve the right to abstain from motivational booing until such time relegation is confirmed next season. Give him a break for now please chaps and chapesses?

He's also an owner who cares about the club and runs it in a stable fashion.

RFC is a train wreck right now with owners who have no clue and have people advising them with even less knowledge than Stam does.

I hope Stam's successful but won't be supporting him (I'm sure he's crying about that) until he actually shows some sign of being competent.

That is the sort of support that is not worth anything.
Surely he deserves our support until he is seen to not be competent.
I see a sad trend of people who are only willing to support a successful club, rather than showing the support when it is needed.
Those who will come running back once things are going well will be welcome, but can't complain if the odd cry of 'plastic' is aimed their way....

What like Nigel Howe you mean with merely 20 years or so experience of running a football club and whose uncle was Don Howe ?

Agree the bit about the board having no clue but then JM had no clue when he came in. The board have made mistakes (as did JM) and are learning. How good they are for Reading depends on how quickly they can adapt and plug the gaps that they'll see appearing.
