Is it too early to say that I've said all along there is a decent player there who, with a bit of work, could be a success here?

Of course he may yet be a failure. But it does rather make those who wrote him off as a terrible player with virtually no redeeming features look a little stupid, in my opinion. But then I thought they were being stupid at the time.

Based on how many games you have seen him play?

Enough to make a tentative judgment on his potential that appears to have been far closer to the mark than many others on here, and quite probably more in line with McDermott's judgment than those who thought he was utterly worthless.

Not exactly sticking your neck out to be fair, Ian, with those safety nets and same could be said about anyone we sign.

Having said that though your tactful choice of words is refreshing and wise and much better than totally writing a player off - a player who a professional manager at some stage thought would be good for us who it would be pretty odd to just write off as an internet pundit. How anyone can just write a player off without admitting that he may be at least "decent" and "with a bit of work" "could" be a success is beyond me... but some do, so I salute you even if it's stating the bleeding obvious.

I suppose the lesson learned is to give the new players some slack and let them find their feet.

But that would make HNA? so much less entertaining!

He was written off far too soon by the usual on here. Reading fans are up there with the ficklest of football fans.

West Brom wanted him permanently before we got in there and brought him here. He did well while on loan there, although their fans too had some criticisms as well, but Di Matteo saw enough to want him.

Fact is he came here when we were utter crap under a manager that tinkered too much and had some very strange ideas about tactics, and the team chopped and changed too often for their to be any stability in the team. One or two bad games (and we had many of them) and that was it, nerves set in and it would have been very difficult to regain your composure and build that confidence back up.

He needs to muscle up but I think there's a good defender in there.

Agreed, RR. he looks VERY young, physically not up to the rough and tumble of the Championship
but he gets back to cover, uses his speed, and going forward he looks like he might become
very good indeed. See how he let the Ipswich thug go flying into touch with a delightful side-step,
then he got the cross in for a Long header.

A couple of years from now, a bit more physically solid, more experience
(he can learn a lot from Mac, Harte, Griffin, in particular) and he could be worth serious money.

brendywendy NO,
COMPARED TO THE SLAGGING HE GOT ON HERE FOR ONE BAD GAME AGAINST A WINGER WHO HAD SHREDDED EVERY fb WE EVER PUT IN FRONT OF HIM, AND THE COMMENTS ABOUT HOW HE WOULD NEVER MAKE IT AT ANY LEVEL LET ALONE THIS ONE, MEAN THAT THE JURY IS BACK, HAS RETURNED A VERDICT, AND GONE HOME.

One good game doth not a career make.

didnt say it did. but two games does go a long way towards making the people saying he couldnt play at any level start to look wrong.

But this is the Hobnob way - there is never any middle ground of shades of grey. In the same way that after a win we're certs for the play-off and after a loss we're going to be relegated, players are either absolute crap or world-beaters.

It's a sad state of affairs that I was essentially labelled a know nothing moron because I said that Cummings hadn't played that badly in some of his games (certainly all the ones I saw - which didn't include his roasting by Jerome[?]) and had plenty about him to succeed here.

He's young, is pacey and can definitely put in good crosses from deep. Positioning and decision making is never going to be fully developed for a player of that age and experience, but should improve with age and games. Confidence is obviously key with him as well.
