Did we really pay £1m for Leigertwood? I cannot find any confirmation of that

That was the fee being floated around at the time, a few months later people started calling it £500-750k

Team of players from Haag Royal's list (no goalkeeper):
Murty-------Mariappa--Gorkss-----Kelly
---------Leigertwood----Bikey-----------
-Seol-----------Matejovsky------Convey
-------------------Lita----------------------
Subs: Mills, Duberry, Gunter, Williams, Fae, Blackman, Goater

At their respective bests for Reading, I reckon that side could win the Championship. Two excellent DMs, lots of creativity, Matejovsky wouldn't have to defend, a solid back line, and a deadly striker who would be playing to his strengths. The issue is the lack of impact subs. An injury to Convey would mean playing Fae or Blackman out of position.

If you pick the highest value players then it's another matter:
Whitehead; Halford, Mills, Mariappa, Gunter; Fae, Williams, Matejovsky; Seol, Blackman, Lita (4-3-3)

Given how few big money transfers we make, I think the difference between those sides (excluding Williams and maybe Blackman, who haven't had a chance to prove themselves) is probably meaningful.

On the other hand, I know that they were managers and not players, but i recall a lot of Hob Nobbers moaning about the "Cheap' appointments of Messers McGhee, Pardew, and McDermott. And what a false economy that turned out.
