Forbury Lion

Lacoste There is talk of a minutes applause on the 21st minute in our up coming games.

Don't get me wrong, he deserves a tribute but it seems that every club these days has a minutes applause for something throughout the match and it's just a bit unoriginal.

He deserves something for all his work and I'm gutted about this news today.

What would be the best way to show our support?

Nothing. public mourning is the most cringe worthy thing going at the moment. Yes he has cancer, it's a shame and i to hope he makes a full and quick recovery. But so do thousands / hundreds of thousands of other people. Are we all to turn up at radiotherapy clinics and start clapping them.
+1
Eamonn Dolan comes across as quite a private person who doesn't need the sympathy of strangers who want to feel good about theirselves by organizing a public round of applause just so they can say look at us, we're better people than you lot not clapping over there, even though like you we don't even know this person, probably can't spell his first name and wouldn't recognise if we saw him in Waitrose wearing a Reading FC jacket with ED on the front
However, he is a nice chap so no doubt if it does happen he will say all the right things about how much he appreciates it etc etc.

If you want to offer support, send a personal get well soon card c/o Reading FC, Madejski Stadium.

Cringe-worthy it may be, but it's coming from a good place. If everyone else starts clapping i will do to for a chap who although i don't know him personally, is a friend of a friend. Lets not overthink this, either clap on 21 or don't, it won't change the world either way.

bagman Eamonn has worked tirelessly supporting the development of youngsters coming through the Academy, both all those who progressed to professional status and even premiership, and those who did not make it. For him it has been as important to help those that needed to find an alternative path as those who obviously were going to succeed. Now is the time for all involved to give him back the tremendous support he has given to so many.

How do I put this... whilst I agree with the sentiment and appreciate what he has done for many many kids, at the end of the day it's his job ( and one he probably paid quite handsomely to do). There are many people who have dedicated their entire lives through voluntary work to many good causes that slip away unoticed. I find putting people like dolan on some sort of pedistal and treating him differently to someone else just because he is involved in football quite offensive. This is in no way taking away the magnitude of situation for him and his family, but I think we need a bit of a reality check here.

I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery,

I know this isn't really the place for pedantry, but... applauding him for his incredible work with the U21s? His main responsibility is the academy. Brian McDermott, Chris Cummins and now Martin Kuhl have focused on the U21s while he's been here. 18 would make more sense.

That's a really inappropriate use of the word offensive.
Feel free to not join in with the applause, or use the applause to recognise someone else as well but there is nothing in any way offensive about offering support to someone at the club who is ill.

In 'just doing his job' he has touched a lot of lives- directly and indirectly. The nature of his work, and the way he has always acted means he has a far wider appreciative audience than perhaps a kindly and dedicated youth group leader, foster parent or social worker. Unsurprising that a lot of people who appreciate (and benefit) from his work want to show their appreciation, their support.

Is Eamonn any more deserving than anyone else currently 'battling' cancer, or dementia, or copd? Probably not, but there are clearly more people who care enough to want to do something to let him know. How is that wrong?

If you find applause inappropriate, why don't some of the many HNA? runners enter the next HM or Marathon and raise funds in his name? Get nobbers to sponsor en-masse....? Donations to RBH or whatever he prefers?

Some of us might* donate in appreciation and support of one of our very own nobbers who isn't having the best of news right now...

He's been a big part of the long-term improvement in our club.

We wish him all the best and that he gets well. We've said so in a card we sent him and we'll join in the minute's applause.

I know some people think this applause is naff but in this case it's a good moment to show our support for Eamonn and the more that join in the better it'll be.

Let's not show gestures of support for anyone who has cancer then, just to be fair to everyone.

Yep miss the point why don't you. What i said was lets not treat him differently to everyone else, do you clap at people when they tell you they have cancer? :|

When i read the story i thought, oh that's a shame i hope he gets better soon. That was it, nothing else. But of course some people instantly go on the i'm better than you stance, and start coming up with bright ideas on the best way to grieve publicly. The person who came up with the applause nonsense hasn't done it for Dolan, they did for themselves, they can now tell all their mates 'that was my idea you know, look at me!'

I don't know when all this started but i believe it was when that dirty slut Diana died, ever since then the country has turned to shit. Confounded when Reading fans started singing Fabrice Muamba's name away at Peterborough :|

No. It's called context. You clap because it's an easy way of offering support together.

I could level exactly the same at you for your attitude towards for fans of a football club wanting to show support for someone at said football club. The only one with a holier-than-thou attitude is you. They're not grieving by the way, he's not dead.

I don't know when all this started but i believe it was when that dirty slut Diana died, ever since then the country has turned to shit. Confounded when Reading fans started singing Fabrice Muamba's name away at Peterborough :|

Genuine humanity breeds genuine compassion for your fellow man.

Doesn't matter how you show it. Even the intent supports the person suffering.

No amount of 'snark' can remove the good intention.

I wish Eamonn well even though I have never met him. Purely as a fellow human (with some common ground thrown in as he is associated with a football club that I am too).

There, I've said my quiet piece.
