Tranmere 1 - 3 Reading, play-off semi. Great game, and then United threw away the title on the same day. Tee hee.

Or how about 4-2 vs Wolves just after McGhee left, when Ooo Ahh managed to kancker Frogett and then his sub. Did Gilkesy get a brace in that match? Live on ITV, so straight home to watch the video after the match.

Got to agree with wolsey....

Arsenal at home in the cup 1972, or
Newport away 1985, or
Tranmere away leg of play off game, or
Simod Cup semi final, or
Middlesbro home 2007

At all of them except the last....

I would add the away game at Blackpool where we got applauded off the pitch....

Away at Hull when Mr Mad decided he wanted to push a trolley around Iceland (the foodstuffs emporium, not our Iceman centre back) and made a detour through the away fans .... you knew something special was happening then!

Stranegly enough, getting stuffed at Oxford and calling for a taxi.... although I was pigging miserable at the White Hart in Nettlebed afterwards...

Barnsley 7-0 on my birthday.... strange how Parky has swapped allegiance.... plastic!

Oh, and Mick Hollis and Minty Murray running top of the table Stockport ragged way back when....

Lord, please forgive, how could I forget... any performance by the Man Friday....

Many already mentioned here (Plymouth in 85, Simod semi v Coventry, Archie against Wolves) but another one I remember fondly was away to stockport in the 93/94 Championship season.

There was about 2,000 Royals there on a Tuesday night for a Promotion 6 pointer. Not a great game but we made one hell of a racket for 90 minutes. I remember Micky Gooding at the end of the game in the goal in front of the away end on an adrenaline rush, clenched fists through the back of the net screaming his head off.

Forster v Wigan was amazing, the place was bouncing that night.

Plymouth and Simod semi for me, but a special mention for packed house v Bristol City one of those times we beat them. (Did Horrix fluke a goal from the wing against a bald goalie? I seem to remember some unbearable tension then but as I'm not an RFC historian I'll wait for someone to remind me with facts!)

11 January 1992
Reading 1 (Senior 84), Huddersfield Town 0
An insignificant game to the everyday fan. not for me. Personally my first ever game watching Reading win. trevor Senior tapping in the rebound after we'd hit the post. One of Jim Leighton's last games for Reading during his loan spell that resurrected his career. I'll never forget the moment Senior touched that ball in, a great moment.

12 April 1997
Reading 2 (Lovell 90 & 90), Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 (Atkins? 84)
Revenge is a dish best served cold. ARCHIE!! ARCHIE!! ARCHIE!!

I would also put the 95 playoff away semifinal against Tranmere but I wasn't there even though I had a ticket. I resent my Dad for it and I always will do. I watch this video plenty of times and have anger welling up most of the time. I so wanted to be there.

For about 40 minutes against Peterborough a few years ago we were just like Brazil. We attacked and attacked and attacked. Darren Caskey was just brilliant and spent the whole pinging the ball from side to side with pinpoint accuracy. It seemed like we were playing the football of the Gods.

Then the ref gave a penalty for head-ball against Barry Hunter and we lost 1-0

Fred Sharpe's Nose Semifinal v Coventry, yeah
4-3 v Plymouth, yeah
plus
8-0 v Southport (1970)

But since the title of the thread is "greatest moment", it would have to be the moment Gilkes' penalty went in against Coventry. The whole place exploded, unbelievable euphoria. Seeing that video clip the other day brought a tear to the eye just remembering it.

Agreed.

If my memory isn't playing tricks, the Southport game was a ceremony of wave after wave of Reading attacks and we were even walking the ball into the net at one stage..............Cummings was tearing down that left wing.

bre
kiwiroyal this cannot include promotion to the prem or any other leagueso mine would have to be the simod cup semi final ,ohhhhh what a night that was

I think that the Simod semi final was the most meroable and greatest moment that i have experienced following Reading. The tension and then of course relief during the penalty shoot out was amazing. Topping it all of was that winning meant that we were in a Wembley final! I don't think that any game before or after has topped it.

I remember being on the pitch at the end of the game and couldn't believe that little Reading were going to Wembley.

There are many that have been mentioned but the 2 that stand out for me are 7-0 vs Barnsley and the away trip to Newport.

We could go on.......Plymouth, Wigan, etc etc but those 2 stand out for me.

However one game that does stand out for the wrong reasons was Bristol City a home (1984) when, as the teams ran out, what seemed like to whole of the front wrong of the seats got up and piled over and ran towards the Southbank !!! I had never seen anything like it (apart from on TV) and was totally shocked by it.

Strange one this from me:

Steve Stone missing an open goal at Elm Park when he was supposed to be at his best!

Stuck in my mind for ever, but no idea what the game was - (suppose it must have been Forest, but don't really know)

Lee Nogan in the 87th minute v Bolton.

"I'm going to remember this game forever as one of the most amazing atmospheres every witnessed at Elm Park. The Reading faithful were brilliant and the South Bank sung the Royals to a memorable victory over a team who were supposed to be the best in the division. Second best maybe over the Royals. 'We are on our way to Wembley' and the classic 'are you watching Mark McGhee' echoed across Reading. The chants of 'Blue Army' rung out around Elm Park for about 15 minutes solid in the second half. Shortly after Nogan scored the goal that toppled Bolton and put Reading points clear of Bolton and ever closer to securing a play off place. ........

...........With 87 minutes on the clock Osbourn played the ball forward to Lee 'worth a couple of million at least' Nogan who unleashed a mighty shot we all went wild. The entire of the South bank leapt about 20 foot in the air and started to celebrate with a chorus of 'We Are Going Up!'. And I think we are on this performance. Theres no reason why we can't win the Play offs at wembley - the only team up the top we haven't beaten so far this season is Tranmere. The last three minutes Reading soaked up a bit more pressure before pushing forward themselves. Reading were brilliant, the atmosphere was great. This has got to be the best Reading team of all time. See you at Wembley!"

Gloriously hot spring day on April 1 1995. Finally felt I belonged in the South bank when we went 3-0 up in first half against Swindon. Then (after Archie scored a penalty?) a fan legged it towards the Swindon end expecting everyone to follow him but no one did and he was cheered off as he was grabbed by stewards. Fell in love with the club on that fine afternoon....

It was, and I remember that SS acknowledged his miss with a shrug to the crowd.

Anyone remember the game against Sunderland (97?) at EP, when we won 4-0? I remember the southbank singing 4-nill to the blue and white, when one of the macham fans ran on to the pitch, grabbed the loose ball and kicked it into the Reading goal. Without missing a beat, the Southbank sang 4-1 to the blue and white... I think the fan managed to dodge the tangos too.
Good bunch of fans, and a good night in the Spread I seem to recall.
