Daniella Think we could be on for a stuffing here, as well as lyon. River are a very technical side with players who are comfortable on the ball. I'm expecting a game dictated by the tempo river choose, which will probably be a lot slower than we're use too. I'd be very surprised if we had over 40% possession all game.
Their not the side they used to be with aimar, saviola, ortega, etc but still a big threat.

I must have been dreaming that we finished 8th in supposedly the best league in the world and gave supposedly the best team in the world four decent games!
Depending on the strength of the team fielded by both teams i think this could be a tight game.

Don't care about the result, just as long as we don't pick up any injuries

Like others, while it'd be great to chalk up a win against the likes of River Plate and Lyon, the result isn't really the thing here. I'm looking forward to see how we approach it.

The conditions will not really favour our bustling style so we will have to keep possession better than is the norm for the Premiership. Factor in thats it's our first games of pre-season so fitness levels won't be at their highest and it's a game where a lot of our strengths maybe diluted somewhat.

Of course the incredible thing for me is that we're playing in this tournament, with this calibre of opposition in the first place.

Very difficult to predict such games.Although a "friendly" tournament and a chance for pre season warm up there is a 2 million prize at stake so there should be a competitive edge of sorts!Just dont need any broken legs.
I will go for the 1-1 draw.

Bookies odds(bet 365):

Reading 15/8
Draw 9/4
River Plate 23/20

A quick "Look at me" post.

I am off to Seoul tonight to take in the first 2 games and although I do not normally worry about results in pre-season I want us to do ourselves proud out there. Would settle for a win/draw/loss over the 3 games.

yay

proper footy to talk about

how on earth do you predict a game like this?

6-3 to reading?

i think we'll do ok, cant wait to see how the lads are doing fitness wise, how seol is looking motivation wise, how the young lads perform, how cisse plays, any new formational experiments, and whether we can mix it with some really big teams of world football.

Barry the bird boggler K.O. 12 midday (UK time) Friday 13th July

Thought it was an 11 k.o.?

Not too worried about the result. Would be nice to advance to the final though.

According to the OS (currently) all our group games in Korea kick of at 8pm local which equates to midday UK time.

However I'm sure last week the OS had some of the games as being 11am kick offs our time!

handbags_harris The Argentine League looks like this at present:

http://www.soccerway.com/national/argen ... 7/apertura

River Plate are 3rd, 6 points behind Boca Juniors and Estudiantes after 19 games. I believe River Plate finished 6th last season, but don't quote me on that...

Argentinian league runs twice a season with some averaging of the points.

Most. Complicated. League. Ever.

Reading to draw 1-1; pundits to say that the 2nd season syndrome has already kicked in.

Come on, who are we kidding.

The Far East climate and ground conditions are perfectly suited to the Latinos. Look how often they won the Toyota Cup. And that was in December. It will be steamy, stuffy and sweltering with high humidity. Our players will lose several kilos each, if not the match. That depends on whether Los Platos bother to turn up - they may regard us as a kind of joke. We have a better chance against Lyon.

As long as nobody gets injured it doesn't really matter; though I predict Seol will tear them apart.

If he's playing.

Amen to that brother (although a decent performance would be a bonus).

For anyone interested in a punt, Corals have a market on this:

River Plate - 11/10
Reading - 2/1
Draw 11/5

Call me a pessimist but that 11/10 looks mighty fine

By the way on both previous occasions when this tournament was played Lyon were losing finalists. So perhaps a wager on them being runners up is called for.

1-0 the R's.

Hunt scores in the last minute, and rips off his shirt in celebration to reveal the new Reading tattoo on his back, only to discover an enormous phallus in its place.

One season wonders. Wigan went and beat man united 3-1, wolves also beat them and got relegated. The standard of the argentinian league is far far better than given credit for. Their player's are far more technical than the english, thats why they always play far better, attractive football than we do. They are also in control of the game by managing their ball retention and tempo far better. Whenever england play we run around like 10 headless chickens with a bit of heart, can't keep the ball and somehow manage to hang on for a result then go out on penalties.

If both teams played their full teams id be backing river. If its just a bunch of reserves then who cares, anything can happen.

well its live on setanta at 12, repeated again at 6

as for a prediction, who cares! pre season games mean nothing.

Not so long ago I saw us lose 2-1 to farnborough a week before the season started. Grumbles and groans alla round as people left the ground.

We broke a number of records that season

Does anyone really care what the result is?

If we play well and lose, ah well

If we play poorly, might be a bit of a worry

As long as players are doing as they are instructed and no-one is injured, then its good.
