rotherwick_royal Yet another controversial interview from Kits, but an insight I don't think we've had before...

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528, ... 87,00.html

The fact that we 'didn't freshen things up' and still haven't this year is a big worry. If that mentality still prevails we'll be lucky to finish mid-table in the Championship.

Edit - Ignore that just found it.

Nick Shorey my Lord! Well it's not telling us anything we didn't already know. The team fell out with each other and we played like donkeys as a result.

I think his comments about a lack of a leader are an indirect swipe at Coppell's management when we were up against it last year.

And again, perhaps not at all that unfounded ... ?

The idea of a bling/non-bling split makes sense. Please tell me we've kept the non-bling.

(Goes away, looks at team sheet. L. Lita ...)

bugger

I don't think anyone could say that about our play in 2005/6. That was much more about flowing football.

There's a lesson there somewhere...

Except that teams did criticise us for being 'direct'. Southampton, for one, but I remember several comments of "they did nothing, broke quickly and scored". What we did well was absorb pressure then break down the wings before crossing. It was direct but ... measured? Precise?

that isn't "being direct", just playing on the break.

Bearing in mind that Saints were pretty ordinary when they came to our place and allowed us a run-of-the-mill victory, I'm not sure what that player must have been on.

We did use to break very fast, but it was usually running with ball and passing into space. We didn't hit it long that much. We just seem incapable of off-the-ball movement these days.

It's all down to confidence I think.

What I find interesting in all this is just what the management were doing while the ‘Lord of the Flies’ meltdown was going on?

We now have several players going public on the behind the scenes battles being fought so I don’t think anyone can be in any doubt that the Reading ‘sprint, flair and tenacity’ went down the tubes last season.

Leaving apart the constant stream of bullsh*t we, the fans, were being fed about the team spirit and ‘togetherness’ that would pull us through, just what was Coppell and the rest of the management doing?

I include ‘yes Mr Chairman’ Murty in this. It is his responsibility, as team captain, to sort these things out at the player to player level in the dressing room and, when he was playing, on the pitch.

Looks like complete and utter management failure to me.

Southampton away, Nigel Quashie? Although a 0-0 draw I do distinctly remember a complaint about the way we played that game. I think most of them stopped around December, tbh.

And, while I completely agree with your point wrt how we actually played, teams in that season did criticise us for playing direct. They might have a point, they might be missing it - which is maybe why we got 106 pts.

What I find interesting in all this is just what the management were doing while the ‘Lord of the Flies’ meltdown was going on?

Coppell was Piggy.

Kitson has a superb comment today. After his spat with Gullit at the start of last season, this one is almost as good.

STOKE record signing Dave Kitson has hit out at TV experts he believes are queueing up to blast the Potters’ style of play.

The striker, who joined from Reading for £5.5million last month, thinks the likes of Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson should think twice before slamming Stoke’s long-ball game.

Kitson said: “There are some well-known pundits who played in double-winning sides, league-winning sides and European Cup-winning sides but they’ve never fought a relegation battle.

“They never knew what was needed to stay up.

“But the fact is, you play the manager’s way, if he thinks this is how we win.”

Regardless of the team spirit issues, the key is his intiial quote about "when we didn't freshen things up". And despite our manager admitting this mistake, it's still stinking and we're still sinking.
