Whats hilarious is you have completely misunderstood. The team wasn't competant yesterday- thats my opinion not a quotation from the manager, that needs to be addressed NOW, not over 2/3 seasons. I haven't invented anything, so what an odd statement from your own mis-understanding. I'd hope we'd see a development over 2/3 seasons for crying out loud- thanks for stating the obvious BR.

The team was competent. It just wasn't at Newcastle's standard. On that showing they'll take apart many average championship teams just as well as they did yesterday.

What is worrying is not being able to assess how we'll do against the average teams, and the worry that we'll look as equally blunt up front.

I don't think it's even about putting kids in. The kids have actually looked pretty good. The problem is partly that the experienced players haven't played that well.

The other problem, the one that may take 2-3 years to solve, is that we are trying to play a continental style without the players knowing how to play it. It's one thing teaching players to keep possession by passing and moving. It's another to get them to learn how to create an opening playing that way. It's just not something English players grow up doing.

Yeah- I pay for my season tickets now, im really not looking to wait 2/3 years to see a capable side again.

Seriously though, no manager is stupid enough to expect fans to wait 2/3 years for a team to be able to perform.

Football is played today, not in 2/3 years time. If you expect fans to wait 2/3 seasons to see a competant team, you are a moron of the highest order and should go and follow rugby.

Nothing there about the performance yesterday, if you saw the game last week you saw a competent display that lacked goals.

This week you saw a young team beaten by a experienced one.

OH NO!!!

Apart from the point of football being to score goals

Is someone going to have to define competent for you to prevent further back pedaling?

When Rodgers was talking about it taking 2-3 years to build a squad he probably had players like Rosenior in mind. Players like him Federici, Bikey, Kebe, Harper, Matejovsky, Long and others have potential but too often flatter to deceive. We need Rodgers to give them a chance to prove themselves and those who can and fit into the system we'll keep. Then we need to see which if the youngsters can again transfer potential to consistent quality performances. Add into the need to buy new players and you can easily see why it will take more than one season for Rodgers to build his own squad. Also, would we want a Derby situation next year if we did go up? Davies admitted that they had planned to reach the Premier League in 2-3 years, built a solid Championship squad that vastly overachieved and was never ready for the Premier League. That has probably set them back 5 years.

Even if the kids do prove to be good enough to compete, I wouldn't expect it to materialise into good results for several weeks as they find their feet and adapt to the new style of play.

Anyone thinking it will all click instantaneously is being pretty naive. If you don't like reading negativity, i'd give this board a miss for a while because things aren't going to get better overnight.

Given that the club's chosen this route, fans are going to need to exercise some patience and, if they want to vent, should vent on here at the club's choices, rather than at the ground, at the youngsters as that just isn't going to help.

I've not back peddled once, I wish you'd stop making stuff up. Competent is giving a good account of yourself and matching your competition- not necessarily having to win. We were shocking and letting kevin nolan keep that ball in out of sheer lazyness for their 2nd was embarassing. So far in two games we've knocked a couple of passes around which is lovely, we've failed to score twice and conceded 3 against a side which had only won twice since feb. So far, we are incompetant which is why we sit second from bottom in the table. There is only one worse team in the division who have started worse than us and we play them on tuesday.

Lets hear your version fo competant mr know it all.

Competent is adequate but not excellent. Last week was adequate but not excellent. This week was not good enough. There is nothing to suggest next week won't be adequate but not excellent either. So far i've seen one competent performance and one poor performance and i refuse to read any more into it in the second week of the season. Its completely pointless to do so.

Newcastle's awful record from last season was due to their club's turmoil, bad management and the players not performing anywhere near their potential. We played them at a bad time, they have a siege mentality at the moment, are still doing "it" for Sir Bobby and more importantly still have experienced players who wouldn't look out of place in the top of half of the Premier League. Thankfully we will not come up against such quality players every week.

laziness my arse, pearce turned to the deep player and said to go get it just as that player had turned his head, then switched back onto marshalling the middle-was unlucky, and a lesson learnt

the game just ran away from us after conceding-but that can happen, it happened alot under coppell.
if long hadnt kept his hand up, and the defence hadnt switched off there wed still have been in the game
if smith had been sent off, or long hadnt been pulled up when clean into the gaping area, wed have won-
these are sometimes the margins.as it was we lost leadership/organisation and shape and capitulated, which is a worry, but something the kids should learn from.
this teams about building something special, and after xmas i can see us coming together to put in a surge, itll just be a nervy time getting there, and schards is correct, its important we dont let our nerves transfer to the kids at home

After watching our 1st 2 x games of the season - it reminded me of watching Southampton last season, very young and inexperienced side that were very good at passing the ball around the pitch (mostly in their own half) but lacking any idea in the final 3rd of the pitch.
In most games (apart from the games they played against us!) as soon as Southampton conceeded a goal their heads dropped and never managed to get back into the game.
This is a carbon copy of us so far this season - I kow that Brenda has said to be patient and its a 2/3 year plan, but if we don't improve and spend some proper money in what's left of the transfer window then we will be planning from Division 1 next season.
Its been so apparant from since January that we are lacking decent supply from the wings and finishing but what have we done to rectify this - get rid of 2 of our strikers and a winger that although most wanted rid of - was on paper the best player for assists in the Championship last season.
Lets put in a decent bid for a young proven goalscorer (e.g. Leeds Jermaine Beckworth) before its too late!!

Royal Lady Deathy - what is it with you? You say on other threads that we need to drop Rosenior, we need more players - have a general moan, then you say you're prepared to wait 2/3 years as per this thread. Make your mind up.

Therein lies the rub.

What??? I'm happy as said a million times already to wait 1-2 years and the kids get a chance. I've been saying that for a year now. What I'm not happy with is Rosenior who has been pants for a good 18 months, and if we can replace him, we bloody well should. We need more players? Well we're light, yes, but I'm not and haven't been calling for for many more signings. A striker obviously, maybe two, as Long just isn't up to it IMO.

Even though it's Deathy saying it I don't think there is much wrong with that.

We DO need to replace Rosenior. We DO need some more firepower. Together that means we DO need more players. BUT you would be pretty stupid if you weren't willing to wait a couple of years to watch the promising players we have develop into extremely talented and experienced ones.

Getting bodies in now almost certainly won't see us promoted this season. It might next and it might bring on the players we do have a little quicker. Just because we need something, doesn't mean that people aren't prepared to wait for the next team of successful heroes to emerge.

Sir Dodger Royal Typical RTG response. SDR is a winner and only wants winners not losers.

SDR knows besttttt

Then why on earth did you disappear over both the 106 Championship season and the 1st season in the Prem????

Was it because we were winning and you had nothing to moan about to Brenda????

You know when you've been rumbledddddddddddddddddddd

Deathy Sounds great in an ideal world. This isn't an ideal world.

Don't agree, we are in the strongest position in our history to sign players and we aren't.

Did we not play and finish 8th in the Premier League? You are aware we're in the Championship?

You've missed the point. We've got a lot more money since then, the only thing that has dropped is the motivation for players to sign.

Not this again?!! How has getting £12 million in transfers fees so far been less finances available?
