Really good read, and Silkman is spot on here too:

"They [Reading] need a striker who is a proven goal scorer at that level. They need a defender who has experience of the top level and the same with a midfielder. Reading have a good team and if they can add to that, stay in the league and keep adding to it year after year they can build from there."

Right then. First up, spunk 7 million on Kitson and Sonko.

Exactly: Stoke have wasted a lot of money, not only on those pair but on Beattie and others. Pulis has succeeded through team management skills, but I wouldn't want us to emulate his hit-and-miss approach to signings.

I don't necessarily believe we should sign proven players at prem level, who would likely be costly and mightn't fit the team ethic; I wouldn't be surprised if Brian signs some up and comers from the championship that he couldn't afford before.

*

These media pundits advising Reading what to do don't understand the club. We do it our way, which will be more like the Norwich and Swansea way than the QPR and Portsmouth way. Brian knows better than them what to do; he will take plenty of advice, but from people who know what they are talking about when it comes to Reading, like Pardew and Coppell ... maybe even Brendan.

And he revealed how the club is still paying some of the wages of former strikers Robbie Fowler and Robbie Keane because they did not want to take a drop in wages when they left Elland Road.

Ah, but surely that wholly dubious practice was stamped out after that fiasco?

But anyway, I should imagine that was a separate contractual arrangement between the selling club and the player rather than a contribution to his ongoing wages.

Maybe I appear too literal here but that feels very different to me. I CAN get my head around that!

Man City are still paying a portion of Adebayor's wages, so it's still allowed and still happens apparently.

TheSiege ...A lot of the hype was also due to this being our first Prem match of the season and we 'bigged up' the opposotion.

The thread is a year old.....I never knew Reading fans could see into the future!

TheSiege The whole 'Stoke is a good example to follow' thing was based simply. Stoke came up to the Prem. They used their attributes to hang in for the first season (Huge players, Long throws, good free kicks and corners) and then, slowly, completely changed their personnel over the next few seasons. The idea of starting slow and then changing things is good. A lot of the hype was also due to this being our first Prem match of the season and we 'bigged up' the opposotion. However, will not do another Stoke - they will do a READING!

TBH, I still doubt that's true. Much more likely a settlement / pay off has been reached.

A settlement paid in monthly installments perhaps?

Same difference really isn't it RR?

Player wants to be paid £X because that's what he's already on, new club only wants to pay £Y, so current club pays him £X-£Y to cover the shortfall in wages.
