but having got one for free, why couldn't we then also get Bertrand in when he became available - I bet he'd have wanted to come here - knowing the players, the set up etc. It's not like we're awash with other left backs as it is.

The club probably don't want to pay three people to do one person's job. Bertrand might have wanted to come back and he might not; we'll never know now. Maybe Williams will start to show the form that convinced McDermott sign him in the first place. I can't remember a single player who wasn't moaned about on here shortly after signing.

I'd love to agree with you and BFers, but it's the basics. Last night he was trying to show his man down the line but pretty much turned his back on him. There was a few occassions when their right-back got forward and he was taking some heavy touches, but Williams' back was to the player meaning he couldn't nick the ball away with what should be an easy tackle to make for a Championship defender.

I'm not writing him off before giving him time, but it's hard to find many positives when the basics aren't there. The number of crosses that came from their right was too high, especially in the first half. Their first goal came from a corner which he really should not have conceded.

Hmm. Worrying as the consensus is, give the lad a chance. Fair enough to knock him based on the evidence of your own eyes, but don't take cheap shots just because he was cheap and where he came from. It would be a tough call for me to say who my favourite player was pound-for-pound between Doyle and Shorey...

I spent a while talking to a Scunthorpe fan at York races last week and he said Williams was a really good buy for us and he was sorry to lose him but did take a while to show his true colours there and would take time to settle. Nice as it would be to still have Bertrand, I'd sooner be taking a punt on reasonably-priced players who have a longer-term future if they work out. If they don't, then hey, those warm pints of Fosters at the ground don't pour themselves you know...

I would write Armstrong off just yet, he's had injuries like this before and bounced back, albeit for short periods. Would be great to have him and Ingimarsson fully fit right now...

But as said before, hard to say how long the club can justify paying someone who is out injured for half their contract.

Well that would still make us have a bloomin slow defence wouldn't it! Ivar's legs went years ago, as much as a legend he is, he shouldnt be the club captain and should have been released to free up the wage bill to bring in genuine quality...................kish
