And yes you're right. The only way we could be self sufficient financially would be to drastically cut our wage bill. I'd LOVE to see your reaction if that started happening.

Christ are you serious? That is the only thing that's happened since we've been relegated. Our wage bill is probably less than a quarter of what it was in the prem. Id love to see a comparison with facts and figures from accounts. Can't believe you just said that.

And it's still more than we can afford! Our wage bill is one of the highest in the league, which given that we are one of the smaller clubs in the division, makes it unsustainable. Which is WHY we need to sell every year to be financially sufficient.

I don't know why I'm arguing really - there's nothing anyone can do about the situation. Sorry, I have a bit of passion for the club I've supported for over 30 years - I just don't remember us ever moaning that we didn't replace the likes of Webb, Dixon, Senior with comparable players - I've seen some dire games in my time and relegations. I think we're just spoiled now and seem to think it's our God given right to be in the Championship - time will tell.

There is more chance we are amongst the lowest than highest, so I am definitely waiting for proof.

I've seen us play much worse than that and win comfortably.

Still pretty poor though.

Go look at the FR for last year. Then tell me that we can afford to spend a load of money on transfers.

It's what the club have said. I'll take their word for it until you give me proof otherwise.

winchester_royal There is not a load of money in the club that can be made available for transfers. The money we've brought in this summer has to be put towards financing the club's running costs in the future.

Then I would have to say that having sold Gylfi, Mills and Long in the last 12 months and the millions we received for them, if we're having to use ALL of that money to put towards financing the club's running costs in the future, we are NOT a well run club!

We're not putting it all towards the future :|

McD said today he has some to money to spend. Just not enough to go spunk a load of money on an over-priced striker.

And yes you're right. The only way we could be self sufficient financially would be to drastically cut our wage bill. I'd LOVE to see your reaction if that started happening.

No mate, the way forward is to trim the squad but have players who are ready to hit the ground running rather than have to rebuild and start every season poorly. What's the point in having players like Tabb and Howard who really are never gonna challenge for 1st team places? By triming the squad, we'd be able to afford some decent players and on good wages. Did you know that the average wage for a championship team's 1st striker is £15,000 per week? Long was on £9,000. We are nowhere near the highest spenders

Pompey have no money - but they managed to re-sign Benjani and still pay Kitson's wages etc. How do they do it?

By being crooks. I can't believe you're using Pompey as an example. They were hours away from ceasing to exist last season.

Where did the club say it...and when?

Also, how do they know the wages structure of every other club?

You'd fit in really well in North korea with your acceptance of blatent propaganda.

They don't care about the long term financial consequences.

Probably because they know nothing will happen to them, like Cardiff.

Of course there are players out there who we could sign but for some reason the purse strings are getting tighter and tighter and the usual line of 'We will go with what we've got' is grating even more! I believe Brian is right to not panic buy but there are, and have been, good players out there who don't cost too much and could've been signed. For example Henning Haugher recently signed for Hanover in Germany and is an international player, fits the Reading mould of being young (25 yrs) and is a really good player. Haugher was in the last year of his contract and was sold by Stabæk for about £300,000...and yes he is worth more than that so RFC could've cashed in later on if such a deal had been struck. I am not saying RFC need another midfield player but in my opinion one good example of a player (who actually was looking for a move to the UK) who was a reasonable price and defintely would have fitted the RFC mould. I should know I have seen Haugher play for Stabæk for the last 8 years. So just exactly what, if any, are the players RFC looking at??? Is it all down to a supposedly Scrooge wage structure or is it something else?

There was a good response by a RFC fan on BBC Berks after the game who mentioned something along the lines of it's what we want (RFC fans) and not what you want (in response to Mr Mads cutting the cloth speech year after year) in terms of at least signing one or two players to at least give us some hope about getting back to the Premiership. It's not the Premiership that bothers me so much as I like the Championship just as much if not more but it's the lack of any spark from the club in terms of new signings especially when big money has again recetly been made.

I'm sure they know the kind of money that players from other clubs are on.

Whatever, obviously there's no arguing with you. I'm sure you're right; we have millions sitting there just waiting to be spent if it weren't for mean Mr Chairman.

That's a pathetic attitude to suggest we follow. It has been said many times, by lots of people, but I am really glad you're not our chairman.

A sure sign you've lost an argument when you completely make up an alternative scenario. We aren't talking about chairman or millions sitting there, you made a statement claiming that we are amongst the highest spenders on wages in the division...we aren't and you have nothing to back it up with other than " the club said so once".

Awful.

I'm NOT talking about spending 10s of millions.

Be interesting to see how much we do spend on these players McD is looking at, if we bring anyone in. What would you say if we spent 3 million on 2 or 3 new players then?
