Z175 This sensible debate has been sidetracked by the usual accusations of racism v sense of humour failure...

So how did Gunter get his German name?

Actually we have a few funny names, both our right wing Jamaicans have Scottish clan names, our northern striker sounds oddly French and what the hell is the origin of the name Leigertwood?!

Aren't Jamaican/other Afro-Caribbean names something to do with the slave owners (i.e they adopted their surnames)? I thought I was told that when I was younger, although it could just be another crock of shite that is passed around without any truth.

Yes, but the fact that McAnuff and McCleary are mixed race and only half Jamaican suggests that their names may come from more recent times.

Irish-Jamaican is a common mix, I have an Irish-Jamaican mate whose surname is Kelly. I doubt their names have much to do with slavery, most likely they have one Jamaican parent and one Irish/Scottish parent.
