wingnut Dreadful game. We didn't have a shot in the second half and the goal the only effort in the first. Couldn't have complained if Ipswich had equalised or even won that - certainly had two very good chances in the second half.
Still a win is a win and Ipswich are a well organised side if somewhat limited so a decent result but Christ it made for poor entertainment.

If you can't find anything positive to say after that game, you need to find a new hobby.

Exciting football isn't all about shots on goal. It's about being an absorbing contest. A tight 1-0 can easily be as good as a 7-1 win against Bolton. I enjoyed today. My normal guide is how quickly the clock seems to count down. For me a good game sees the first 80 mins fly by and then the last 10 take an eternity (if we're winning) or race by (if we're down by the odd goal)

Really enjoyable to watch these young academy products prosper, a completely different feeling compared to last season. Hector was outstanding, great to see players like Taylor and Cox - who are Reading through and through - give 110% for the club, supporters playing for their beloved club, great to see.

Echo the positives from today. Thought Gunter, Hector and Taylor were the stand out performers, Cummings also excellent again out of position at left-back. Only real negative was Akpan. Terrible player who is out of his depth at this level. Yep, he stuck his head on the ball and did alright in that respect, but his passing was at times atrocious, and has the first touch of a rapist. The sooner Karacan, Guthrie and Williams are back, and Hammond comes in, the better we will look - and again that should mean Akpan being sold or loaned out.

Over performance wasn't the best, but they made up for it with guts and determination, and the crowd showed their appreciation which was great to see! Four points from the opening six is excellent. Huddersfield will be a test as they have some pace, but that's winnable, and then two very tough away trips. These are good points banked in what will be a mixed season.

I agree with you that a tight 1-0 can be as absorbing as a 7-1.
Today wasn't absorbing-I didn't see wingers taking on defenders,I didn't see exciting passing movements and I didn't see the keepers making saves.
Going to a home game against equal or lower level teams I expect to see us playing attacking football-I didn't see that today.
I wonder what you saw to give you great enjoyment today other than the satisfaction of seeing some of our youngsters come on for a few minutes towards the end.

BTW Ian I don't agree with you about Kuhl-all teams will have players bigger than him but I think he has a good footballing brain and is made for a central midfield role and the big disappointment was that he didn't start the game v Newport.

On paper with the side we had out, 1-0 was a fantastic result. Performance wise, good football in the first half, hanging on in the second. If you had Guthrie in there for Akpan, that would make a massive difference.

thought Cummings was immense today considering he was playing out of position, Really looks to have improved a lot.

Hector was great particularly in the second half but that style of trying to nick a foot in will be noticed and he'll struggle in a game or two soon. Keep the faith when it happens, he looks like his game reading is excellent

Well whoever did those stats clearly nodded off during the game. He took on and beat a defender inside the left of their area towards the end of the game before putting in a good cross.

Then perhaps it's good that you didn't remember it after our goal!

winchester_royal Think today would have been the wrong time for Kuhl (or Tanner) to come on. Ipswich were very physical and tall, and those two are neither. That's why the likes of Cooper and Stacey were brought on imo, to at least partially deal with Ipswich's height. And also probably why Akpan stayed on the pitch despite being totally useless in the second half.

Surprised Tshibola didn't get on instead of Stacey. I may have already said this.

Cox had fantastic ball control but was always too far away from Pogrebnyak to make much of a difference. That invisible line connecting them will come soon. Edwards was noticeably more in tune with Pog when he came on, which is to be expected as they've had a pre-season together, but he suffered from the way the game was going.

Obita started quietly but grew into the game.

Akpan was barely passable but needs to keep his arms down. Every time he jumped his arms went up.

Blackman was poor in the air but broke well when he got it to his feet.

Man of the match for me was Jay Tabb. Everything good that Ipswich did came through him, and he got a good ovation when he went off.

On another note, the pre-match was a mess. Video didn't work properly, music was ear splittingly loud and they didn't seem quite sure as to when it was appropriate to play Ashes.

Really I thought Blackman won his fair share of headers in the first half, flicking them on down the right hand touchline, was just no one getting on the end of them most of the time.

That's poor in the air to me. Why flick it down the channel if no-one's there? Pog was always hanging off his inside shoulder. I really didn't think he got up to many anyway.
