maffff Isn't another high risk strategy finishing very close to the relegation zone then signing up the players that were not good enough to further seasons and expecting a better outcome?

We'll it depends on who you replace, obviously. To me, though our league position was due more to failings of others than Pearce and Federici.
And as for whether their pay was inflated regarding their worth, I have absolutely no idea what money they were on nor of what pay they were offered , so I would ask to see w_r's evidence to back up his assertions.

Really? How do you expect us to 'do better' without spending some real cash? Pearce is a quality defender for this level. We are in serious trouble, assuming he isn't properly replaced,

We have good youngsters coming through Cooper , Sweeney, also there's the lad who was on loan at Basingstoke for the 2nd half of the season. Add to that we can pick up good freebies or Chelsea loanees. Don't panic-be happy

You're not really giving a lot of reasons to not panic there.

EXACTLY.

It's a fairly high risk strategy when those players were far from the weakest links and add to the significant amount of strengthening you need to do. I'm not advocating matching or improving their wages or saying we're doing a bad job in the deals we're offering them. But losing two of your most experienced and better performing players is rarely a good thing.

The problem is the wrong players have come to the end of their contract. I can think of plenty of players we'd be better off losing for nothing, cost wise and / or performance wise. Unfortunately the shambles we were from about December 12 until at least July 14 is still causing us massive problems.

We can't and we won't get better than Pearce. One of our own academy players who always looked passionate about playing for us.

No, not EXACTLY. Not EXACTLY at all. If you think that Federici and Pearce were key components in us having such an absymal season last time out you're deluded. And completely ignorant of the excellent careers both have had at the club. If we were binning off dross such as Akpan and Blackman I'd agree with you, two players who have had ample opportunity to come into a poorly performing side and improve our team but who have instead shown themselves to be absolute carthorses :!: But to say that losing Federici and Pearce is good for the club is sheer revisionist nonsense :!:

Pearce is what? 26? And Team Captain? And we expect him to take a wage cut? You just cant expect somebody at that stage of his career to do that - loyalty or not. if we gambled that he wouldnt find alternative employment - well that backfired. I very much hope we can still secure his services because losing him to a team in the same league for nothing? Not happy with that. But how early this has come up in the transfer window speaks volumes about the contract we offered.

floyd__streete But to say that losing Federici and Pearce is good for the club is sheer revisionist nonsense :!:

Well, exactly.

Im beginning to think that the clear out of all contracts ending in 15 may not have been the best move after all. Three months ago we were after a striker (or two) and now we're after a striker (or two), a goalkeeper definitely and maybe an experienced centre back. It seems to me a false economy. We're doing exactly what we did last time we went into Division 1, and for those that arent old enough to remember that; no, we didnt come straight back up. In fact, it coincided with one of the most pathetic eras of our history.

Maybe we should have taken the 2015 loss and dealt with it in 2016 when the real crap comes off the wage bill.

The fact he was at Basingstoke was he's another young player who needs to get experience a la Hector, not because he wasn't good enough

Hopefully the club is already looking at alternative centre back coverage as even with Cooper the squad has only three recognised CBs, I am assuming that the ex-QPR player will remain a cameo figure until his contract ends, and as Brian M. always says a strong squad need four CBs to cover for injury and suspensions. The current transfer market is dominated by "free" moves as clubs or players do not resign or extend contracts, probably only see the Premiership clubs actually pay monies and normally just prior to season start and end of transfer deadline.
In the current climate Pearce's agent will earn his fee if he finds another club to match the rates Pearce was on.

I don't KNOW but have always understood that Pearce, like Pog, HRK
and a few others are on wages, way above the league's average.

So letting as many of these go as possible and replacing them
seems absolutely essential from a financial perspective.

We survived letting far better players go, and we will do so again.

We could put together a pretty good side from just a few of those

McCarthy
Morrison, Mills, Shorey/Rosenior/(Bertrand)
Kebe, Siggy, Sidwell, SHunt
Kitson, Doyle, Long, ALF, NHunt

The trick is, as always, to get value for money, to get improving players cheap etc.

Pearce is OK, decent etc, but he's replaceable without breaking the bank

Only talking about the notion of re-signing players that were not good enough.

Federici was more than good enough, sorry to see him go.

I like Pearce, he is one of ours - but I am ambivalent about him leaving as I think he's average and there's no getting away from the fact that he was a regular member of a very average defence last season.

:o

After being on a contract originally framed around membership of the PL, and narrowly avoiding relegation last season....

Too damned right we expect him to take a pay cut.

So we all know the contract he has been offered do we? Maybe it's on the same wages, maybe it is less. It could even be more, but maybe not as much more as he wants. Maybe Derby/Leeds won't offer him as much as we have offered. We don't really know anything.

Pearce is good enough for an average Championship side. He is good in the air but very slow when a player goes past him. We should try and keep him. He is much better than Jason Pearce!

I was discussing this with Charles Watts and he agreed Hector's was a pay ride and Pearce is a pay cut, which is obvious considering he's on PL wages and we need to get the wage bill down still... Pearce wants the best deal possible, and like Federici, money talks. Laters flat foot!

It's hard to judge the summer transfer decisions as they happen. Losing Feds is sad, but until we know how we are replacing him we cannot tell how big a loss it will be. Sign an equally good keeper on half the money and it's the right call. Sign a worse keeper on half the money and it's not so smart, unless we use the money saved to sign a 30 goal striker.
When we sold Shaka I thought it was the end, I never thought we'd have another keeper as good as Marcus. Feds was not as good as either of them but he's history now just like them.

Really am not bothered about whether Pearce and Federici go or stay. Karacan would be a much bigger loss to us as he is more of a dynamo in a key area of the pitch.

Players of the calibre of Pearce and Federici are out there and within our budget so it's just a matter of calling the right shots in the next two or three transfer windows for what I'm hoping will be the big push for promotion in 2016/2017.
