Most of Derby's side that got relegated aren't there anymore so how Derby did will have no bearing on how we'll do. Although if Wilder does come I do think expectations will increase. Although he needs 2 seasons minimum to build the team he wants and how it plays.

YorkshireRoyal99 But if Derby can go within 1 game of reaching the play offs given their situation last season, then there is no reason why that shouldn't be a realistic aim for us.

I think Derby getting nearly 30,000 every would give them a rather bigger budget than we'll have.

Derby also went down with a far better team than we did, thanks to their 21 point deduction.

They were better but only 5pts better on the pitch.

8 points better than last year's team. Would you say the 21/22 team was worse than this year's team?

Reagardless, the fact that they probably have a much bigger budget than us, due to getting crowds twice the size, doesn't make them an obvious benchmark.

Mid Sussex Royal Depends on squad...if Ince is on a release clause are Holmes, Yiadom and McIntyre also?

Hopefully not.

When Ince signed his deal, he was a quality player who hadn't been doing well for a while and was getting on,so resale Value probably wasn't a big expectation with him.

Whereas Holmes and McIntyre are both young and on the up, so you'd think protecting resale value would be right up there for them.

Yiadom, I would think he had less negotiating power than the others. But probably the smallest loss of the four.

The point was that Derby only exited administration 3/4 weeks before the season began in the one just gone. With all the costs and debt that comes with that, as well as having to build a squad again as well (they only had 5 first team players signed on at the start of pre-season), as well as the fact they've also been under a transfer embargo until a couple of weeks ago.

Whilst our situation is far from great, it's not as bad as what Derby have had and they missed out on the play offs on the last day. I take your point about having a bigger budget for next season potentially, but we will still have an income that can rival the top teams in the league next season, it just all depends how much the board decide to put in.

No, it means I have high expectations, so it leaves more chance of those expectations to not be met and thus, disappointment.

Hear me out....

I expe t our defence to be much better.

They've played a lot together now. They're fundermentally good players, and with a good manager and coaches, I expect our back 3 at least to be solid. McIntyre, Holmes and Yiadom.

And now Guinness-Walker has signed, presumably at left back?

That should be good enough, with a bit of confidence.

Who is captain next season? Got to be Yiadom?

I'd like to think those who have been relegated will have some fire in their belly to prove themselves.

Would like to see an injury free squad.

And Clarke given a proper run.

Goal: Promotion (within 3 seasons)
Aim: Top 6
----------------------------------------
Expectation: Top 9
Satisfied: Top Half
Disappointing: 16th and above
----------------------------------------
Failure: 17th - 19th
Disaster 20th - 24th

I'd give each new manager minimum 18 months, preferably two seasons, unless they're in failure / disaster territory after 20 games.

Even if they’re way off the goal first season, I think we need to give them time to learn and improve. Continuity and squad building is important. Even if your current man isn't going to get you there, they may at least build you a stable platform to push on and build from. We won't get that swapping every 9 - 12 months.

Defence should be pretty top notch for L1 depending on the keeper situation and whether we manage to hold onto two of Holmes, McIntyre and Mbengue.

Midfield needs a lot of work. This is our big weakness, but it's our weakness because it doesn't exist. Target our resources primarily here for 3 good CMs and a back up, and we should be comfortable, though expect it to take a while to settle.

Attack should be at least solid L1. Though definitely some recruitment required.

Most importantly we shouldn't panic with a slow start. We're going to need an entirely new midfield, with a new manager, on the downer of relegation. I'm mostly looking for a good end to the season rather than farting out limply like usual.

  2. Bolton - 7/1 - 8/1 - 6/1 - 7.00
  3. Peterborough - 9/1 - 8/1 - 8/1 - 8.33
  4. Barnsley - 8/1 - 10/1 - 10/1 - 9.33
  5. Reading - 10/1 - 9/1 - 10/1 - 9.67
  6. Portsmouth - 11/1 - 9/1 - 9/1 - 9.67
  7. Blackpool - 18/1 - 14/1 - 14/1 - 15.33
  8. Charlton - 16/1 - 16/1 - 16/1 - 16.00
  9. Oxford - 25/1 - 20/1 - 25/1 - 23.33
  10. Wycombe - 25/1 - 25/1 - 25/1 - 25.00
  11. Wigan - 16/1 - 50/1 - 22/1 - 29.33
  12. Bristol Rovers - 33/1 - 33/1 - 33/1 - 33.00
  13. Exeter - 33/1 - 40/1 - 40/1 - 37.67
  14. Lincoln - 40/1 - 33/1 - 50/1 - 41.00
  15. Leyton Orient - 33/1 - 50/1 - 40/1 - 41.00
  16. Burton - 50/1 - 50/1 - 33/1 - 44.33
  17. Northampton - 40/1 - 50/1 - 50/1 - 46.67
  18. Port Vale - 40/1 - 50/1 - 50/1 - 46.67
  19. Shrewsbury - 40/1 - 50/1 - 50/1 - 46.67
  20. Fleetwood - 50/1 - 40/1 - 66/1 - 52.00
  21. Stevenage - 40/1 - 66/1 - 50/1 - 52.00
  22. Carlisle - 50/1 - 66/1 - 50/1 - 55.33
  23. Cambridge - 60/1 - 50/1 - 66/1 - 58.67
  24. Cheltenham - 80/1 - 66/1 - 66/1 - 70.67
We're firmly in the top six group at this stage. Of course these odds will no doubt change rapidly once the transfer window opens, but suggests we should be challenging around the play-offs next season.

I like this way of putting it out. My expectations have increased after seeing who's gone up and the mess Wigan are in. I may revise this depending who the manager is. I am basing this off us appointing Wilder and bringing in some solid signings and Dai shows commitment to getting us back up. Think we should be aiming for promotion every year really, but a 3 year timeline is good. As long as we let the new manager build something.

Aim: Promotion
----------------------------------------
Expectation: Top 6
Ok with: Top 10
Failure: 11th or lower
----------------------------------------
Disaster (sack the manager): 18th - 24th

Top half

We need a whole new midfield, that takes time, also Yiadom good pro, but can't create shit all from the right (some how better from the left) Will AC beless penalised this season (doubt it) Tince will be of for his 50k no way will he stay like Bannan has for Sheff W.

So we need a whole new midfield and forwards (certainly a mobile one) and introduce the youth when needed.

It's not going to be easy

Eight points can be a big difference if they separate the winner of the tournament from the loser...

One thing we have developed is a solid loan relationship with clubs like Chelsea. I would not be surprised if we can harness those contacts once more, hopefully to bring in some young prospects.

IF (and it’s a massive IF) we can bounce back next season at relatively low expenditure, I would not be surprised if our owner goes all out again for promotion to the PL. wince.

My expectations for next season? 5th. That’s on the proviso that we sort out the CM positions and we can keep players such as Hutchinson, Holmes, NGW free from injury. lolz.

And the bookies have a pretty decent idea who their manager is (i.e. they have one) and what their squad will look like. May look totally different in a few weeks time.

Exactly, how do you come up with odds for a team which

A) has no manager

B) is running low on players and so needs to go on on a big recruitment drive

C) is coming out of a long period of transfer restrictions, and so has no relevant recent pattern of transfer behaviour

Give it a few weeks and things might become clearer, but even as fans we probably won't get a good feel for how things are going to go until the pre-season friendlies at best. Possibly even not until we're a few games in to the season.

Because we are a recently relegated side, they usually end up in and around the top of the list early on with the bookies. Obviously it depends on the situation though. I wouldn't be expecting Wigan to be anywhere near the top of the list, for example.
