Rev Algenon Stickleback H the sun has traditionally been a tory paper, and most of its columnists have tory leanings. They very much broke with tradition to back labour in the 90s after being a total staunch tory paper previously.

Nope,

The Sun was a Labour paper until bought in the 1960's by a new Australian proprietor..

Does that change the fact that Margaret Twatcher is a stupid bint who sold the country down the river? Sold our Trains sold our post office sold anything she could for short term gain and now we have to pay for her Mistakes

Hey bigmike sorry your state run Utopia has passed away - it had been ill for a while. Dont think there's much chance of a re-incarnation either.

Perhaps you should consider looking elsewhere. I hear housing is cheap and the buses run on time in North Korea - Enjoy!

Were you actually in the North at the time of Thatch's greatest effect at the beginning of the 80's?

Yes in a mining village in North Derbyshire.

Dragging this vaguely back on topic, I can remember our visit to Barnsley during the miners strike when we as visiting supporters were warned, in no uncertain terms, by the local constabulary not to sing any songs about a certain Arthur Scargill!

RL, are you sure you used the right address? The one quoted in this thread is 'dailmail.co.uk'. I am sure this should be 'dailymail.co.uk'.

hobbit From the telegraph report

"Before showing their attacking edge, Coppell's side had to endure a buffeting in the first period. For 45 minutes, and into the break, Chelsea celebrated their title credentials. During the interval, Roy Bentley, the captain of the 1955 side, was presented with a photograph of himself and Ted Drake, Chelsea's then manager"

Shame they could not also include the connection with Reading which could also be why this presentation was made at this game..
Roy Bentley - Reading manager 1963-1968 and later returned as Reading Secretary in 1977.

At least Chelsea pointed it out. I thought it was a pity that Chelsea did not point out that Ted Drake had also been our manager - in fact he managed Reading from 1947 to 1953 immediately before he went to Chelsea when he took them to the top of the league for the first time ever.

Yorkshire Royal That's what makes me chuckle about the left v right arguments on here. All politicians are greedy, corruptible and ultimately always answer to big business... Makes no difference whether the party is to the left, right, or the quite ghastly centre...

Spot on.

The left versus right debate is just kept going to distract the electorate.

Big business, global corporations, and the corrupt people who run them are really in charge.

If voting changed anything, they would make it illegal.

Wasn't Bentley also our captain under Drake and then followed him to Chelsea?

One of his last games was for QPR at the White City, he was playing right back by then , our winger Mickey Travers took him to the cleaners , about two months later he became our manager. Like a lot of top players, and to have played 12 times for England , with about 10 top forwards to chose from he must have been special,he did n´t really cut it as a manager. Had a big feud with the supporters, he kept picking a guy called Rod Thornhill who was a very very average player , the supporters wanted Johnny Petts who was a very attacking wing half, we conceded a lot more goals when he played but scored a load more as well. Bentley would not play Petts unless Thornhill was injured, which unfortunately was n´t very often. In the end Petts went off to Bristol Rovers and played a load of games for them. Rod Thornhill kept on boring the pants off everyone at Reading for a few years, then Bentley was sacked. Went to Swansea and think they won promotion then were in relegation trouble the next year he was sacked.

Lived in Caversham for whilst he managed Reading. Do not know where he lives now but at 82 and going to every Chelsea game, probably lives near London now.
