The whole year inn
Daniella Agree with RL. Its all well and good keeping existing players happy and keeping the foundation, so why is it they want to leave anyway? Sidwell gone and shorey and lita are weighing up their options...basically waiting for a better offer...what do we do about that when the existing foundations want to leave? Its not a case of sticking with what we've got if they are off is it? We are going to need to replace them with existing quality players..something you don't find cheap and have to pay for.

LOL @ you betting week in week out on the team Reading play

SimpLOLeton Alert

Where did I bet against us in regards to the team we play?

If anyone is simple its you, you're talking about something completely different.

You can't win every game and every team have their off day, today was ours, so what! As long as we now don't go to Fratton Park like last year, we're ok.

Well done lads 4 points from four games that we only got 3 points from last year.. still improving.

Personally I had written off August as I didnt think we would get anymore than 1 point.

In my eyes the season starts in September, that is when we really need to show what we are all about.

Daniella This is what happens when you don't bring players in, sorry to say.

And what happens when you DO bring in loads of new players?

Oh yes, you just might start the season like Sunderland, Spurs, M'Boro, Bolton, Fulham, Man Utd and Derby. (Refer below to see where those clubs, each of whom spent considerably more than Reading did on loads of new players, are in the current table.)

1 Chelsea 4 3 1 0 7 4 +3 10
2 Manchester City 4 3 0 1 4 1 +3 9
3 Wigan Athletic 4 2 1 1 6 3 +3 7
4 Liverpool 3 2 1 0 5 2 +3 7
5 Arsenal 3 2 1 0 4 2 +2 7
6 Everton 3 2 0 1 5 3 +2 6
7 Portsmouth 4 1 2 1 6 5 +1 5
8 Newcastle United 2 1 1 0 3 1 +2 4
9 Blackburn Rovers 2 1 1 0 3 2 +1 4
10 Aston Villa 3 1 1 1 3 3 0 4
11 Birmingham City 4 1 1 2 6 7 -1 4
12 West Ham United 3 1 1 1 2 3 -1 4
13 Reading 4 1 1 2 2 5 -3 4
14 Sunderland 4 1 1 2 3 7 -4 4
15 Tottenham Hotspur 3 1 0 2 5 4 +1 3
16 Middlesbrough 3 1 0 2 3 4 -1 3
17 Bolton Wanderers 4 1 0 3 6 8 -2 3
18 Fulham 4 1 0 3 5 7 -2 3
19 Manchester United 3 0 2 1 1 2 -1 2
20 Derby County 4 0 1 3 3 9 -6 1

(good and dare I say it the definitve thread RR)

Personally, I am surprised that Halls hasn't got crucified (in lieu of Seol) for the result, bearing in mind that he actually got pitchside today.

I think today was a worrying result because Bolton have been that bad this season so far, yet from what i hear it was as comfortable a 3-0 you'll see. I'm not convinced with our midfield, don't think it creates enough, you can't keep relying on crosses and balls in from full backs, you need a bit of craft and guile in the middle sometimes, we don't have that.

Glad to hear Lita was back and i would be VERY VERY disappointed if he didn't start next week. You need your best players out there every week playing at their best, otherwise you get done 3-0!!

Reading are in a difficult position when it comes to transfers. I don't buy this 'it's hard to attract players' RUBBISH we hear, there are teams far worse than us in this division and the division below in some cases that have no trouble in bringing in decent players. However the difficulty comes with bringing someone in that will improve us that won't upset the apple cart, it would almost be better to bring 2 or 3 quality big money deals in so it shows thats the way we are going.

Can totally understand Coppell's policy, these players were superb last season but the team we had out today is NOT good enough for a Premiership side. I really hope he has a look at adding just 1 or 2 more players. Would love to see a creative midfielder brought in and maybe another forward.

Not over reacting still think we'll finish in comfortable mid table but that's a shite result and performance today. :(

That team's first outing, many of whom will have been knackered after 5 games in 2 weeks including international join-ups in some cases, with 2 players making their debut, yep that sounds like an over-reaction alright!

Katie Marsden Agree with RL.

We need to take a long hard look at our wage structure and pay decent wages or we'll carry on failing to attract good players and losing our best ones.

Decent wages? Sorry but that term when applied to the obscenity that is Premiership footballers' pay really is a joke.

I'm very pleased to be associated with a club that appears to want to buck the trend. If that means we get relegated then sobeit. Somebody's got to make a stand some time.

Well said, and if we do get relegated, our model will enable us to bounce straight back without having to take huge financial risks along the way.

Our way is the future, not the spend spend spend method - that way would lead to ultimate doom.

Looking at that 16 names, it's not good enough for a Premiership team. The result says it all.

Not that angry, disappointed for everyone that went, giving up their day and lots of money for absolutely bugger all return. All well and good Steve criticisng the international games but everyone else has the same problem!! they just have the quality in the squad to cover it!!

You didn't see the long-ball shot-shy shite that I paid 29 quid to suffer today. Garbage. Sunderland will be my first game home or away missed in more than 18 months. Reason? I can't be bothered.

I kind've agree

I enjoyed my football thirty five years ago as much as i do now..

last season I would have happily seen us get beaten 6-0 every game.....it was "Premier" teams that we were playing after all.....we bucked the system...we won a good few...it was fun

Its a new season, I have no worries, I will enjoy enjoy my football regardless.

But that's what being a football supporter is all about isn't it?

I don't get to away games these days but I well remember driving back from far-flung places in the 80s and 90s, cold, wet, pointless and depressed having witnessed what I am sure was far less of a spectacle than today's game provided.

You've had it far too good for too long Floyd, You've gone soft, expecting a great performance every time you see us play.

Anyway, you went, I didn't, and you have a right to get it off your chest, so fair play to you!
