He did n´t do much of a job for us , but as a National manager he performed miracles.

Zambia almost won the African Cup of Nations.
Armenia two weeks ago drew 1-1 with Portugal in the Euro Cup of Nations
and have beaten Poland in the same competition. Not bad for a crap manager.

I was surprised when he got the sack from us as I thought we were doing ok at the time, and he was responsable for bringing Mick Gooding to the club so he couldn't have been that bad. RIP

I never knew he played 5 games for us whilst on loan in 1976!

Some of us can get a bit emotional about someone dying so young, he was born about six months before me. 61 is no age these days.Hence my error.

I really thought your comment childish, but thought I should explain the reasons for my error as emotions are something you are lacking.

I hope the club has a minutes silence (or applause) at the Wigan game as well as the one to be held at the Stadium of Light

Top Flight Danny Bailey was quality. What you talking about?

Wasn't Danny Bailey one of those players who had the misfortune of being brought in to replace one of the fans' heros - in this case Terry Hurlock?

Players in that sort of situation are always on a hiding to nothing, as we are all very quick to spot where they don't match up to how we remember our departed hero and extremely slow to spot any other talents/strengths they might bring with them.

Colin Gordon was another one in that sort of situation - brought in to replace God #2 (Trevor Senior). Most were quick to condemn him as crap and a donkey. Still believe he managed to score a hat-trick for us against Chelsea?

You are right that some players are on a hiding to nothing, although my memories of Bailey and Gordon were they were genuinely rubbish !

Interesting that both have alcoholic drinks named after them though.

Maybe that latter idea could liven up a quiet spell on HNA.

Any other players with drinks named after them? - Maybe out of respect to Ian Porterfield it ought to be a different thread.

His goal against Leeds brought about as big a surprise underdog victory in an FA Cup final as Sanchez v Liverppol.
Both players were midfielders who rarely scored but came good in 1-0 victories and of course both linked to our club.
He tried his best when manager but unlike all the managers since Bullivant he had no money to spend so it's difficult to judge his performance.
As one of a similar age it hits home-RIP Ian and thanks for the part you played in keeping our club going so that we could reap the benefit later on.

www.readingfc.co.uk Born in Dunfermline, Porterfield managed the Royals between 1991 and 1993.

Too much for to ask for the OS to research this properly, I suppose?

Edit: now duly edited by the OS, so fair play to them.

That definitely isn't correct. According to soccerbase, Hurlock left in 1987 and Bailey arrived in 1990.

No, you've confused him with Gordon Durie, who scored a hat-trick against us, whilst Colin Gordon scored two goals in the same game to knock them out.

So we didn't rush into replacing Hurlock....

Must have been the hair cuts that drew the comparisons then!

There will be a minutes applause as a mark of respect before the game on Saturday and both teams will wear black armbands.

Incidentally I believe that fans may leave tributes at the foot of the Bob Stokoe statue outside the ground.

I didn't mean you were being disrespectful or inappropriate with your original remark, merely that perhaps we ought to use another thread if we wanted to develop the theme further for a bit of fun.
