Victor Meldrew
Sebastian Maybe I'm being cynical, but I don't think fans actually make that much of a difference to a team's performance. Yes the manager comes out and says things like: 'The support made all the difference' after a win but he also says things like: 'The fans were great today, and we feel like we've let them down' after a loss. Now, forgive me if you will, but he says that regardless of how noisy or passionate the team is. So why would he lie?

Well, here's an idea - clubs need to make money. Ticket income makes money. By telling fans that they made the difference to get a win, the fans are more likely to come back in future, giving the club another £25. Likewise, by saying that they feel they let the fans down, it makes us feel part of the 'club' (in a sociological sense, as opposed to 'football club' sense), and so makes us want to come back and help turn things around next time.

Singing/chanting/whatever at football has never, to me, seemed to be anything to do with creating reusults, that seems a fallacy to me - it just seems to stem from people wanting to get beered up and scream abuse at people, very cathartic, and a lot of fun: but I can't see how that has any tangible impact on the team.

I enjoy singing and shouting at football, so I do - but those around me that shush me, etc, have every right to do so - in the same way that I have every right to continue acting like a lunatic. These people pay HUNDREDS, if not thousands, of pounds a season to follow Reading - they owe absolutely NOTHING to the club. We are all consumers of a product: if we bought some ice cream, and it was particularly good, we remember to buy that same ice cream again, we don't start chanting that it's by far the greatest cream the world has ever seen. If people want to come with their families, watch the football, enjoy it or otherwise, but not scream and chant, for God's sake let them: they're not doing any damage at all, and they're not exactly depriving anyone else (who might sing and chant) from having a seat - looking around we're not exactly devoid of spaces, are we?!

And that't the crux of the matter, I think - I believe it would be more demoralising to see the attendances going down week on week, than to have things a bit quieter. Empty seats are easy to spot, especially in the vast swathes that we are developing - it's amazing how quickly they fill up again when we start doing well. In football, perhaps more than any other sport, people vote with their feet - not their lungs.

Well said Sebastian-have said much the same on here before and have always felt that crowds have a miniscule influence on what your team does on the pitch.
It makes the fans feel better and as you say every club pays lip-service to the idea that fans make a difference because that's what the fans want to hear.
World War-don't get so uptight about the fans and please carry on doing whatever you do but don't expect everybody else to do the same.

Maybe footballers are different from athletes. However, I have heard plenty of Olympic Champions etc. state that they are completely oblivious to the crowd when they are competing.

to counter that, ive lost count of the times ive heard players say the fans really helped us today etc so id rather listen to their opinion, than any randomly thrown together of the effect support has on the home team.
but if we are randomly throwing this stuff about then heres my 2 penneth worth:

basically, since the crowd is the only thing different between home games and away games-and since the home win:away win ratio is about 2:1 across proffessional football, id say the crowd being being the team probably does have some sort of positive effect, just like the crowd getting twitchy and groaning has a negative effect

By all accounts, the crowd at Molyneux were very nervous and twitchy today and that had an effect on the players. 'Twitchiness' is an intangible and need not be related to senseless booing or negative calling. It is contagious and can convey itself quickly to players on the pitch.

Sing = Church

Watch footy = Buy a ticket and watch the game.

2 world wars, 1 world cup It's games like this where the fans would've made all the difference

Utter utter utter utter utter utter utter B*LLOCKS.

No surprise, coming from the biggest winger out! You should really move yourself over to the West Stand and let someone with a lung sit in your seat.

I can't believe people say a good, noisy, supportive crowd doesn't help the team.

It does, big time.

He hasn't got the build of a winger, more centre half.

Joe 90 The whole East Stand thing is crap anyhow. The club needs to make the North Stand the chanting/singing end. .

No way, Hose.

Keep well away from our cosy little stand.

It's simple, this club does not have the number of supporters with the same level of pride, belief and passion than a lot of others. That's fine, you can't 'create' this within a fan base it needs to be there historically. We have a small hard core of supporters who do their best home & away but ultimately are drowned out by the people that go along to watch football in a safe environment, probably with their families and that is their Saturday. I'd never question how someone wishes to support their club, their presence at a match is enough in my book, so threads like this really are as pointless and pathetic as the people that start them.

brendywendy basically, since the crowd is the only thing different between home games and away games

I dont think thats true at all. The biggest advantage about being at Home is the familiarity, or Home Comforts is you like. There is also the travelling from the away team to take into account. Outpost teams such as Bournemouth, Plymouth, Hartlepool etc have historcially had bigger home to away win ratios.

I read an article in the Racing Post about this, it was about whether the odds should be effected if a game was played behind closed doors. They did a study and came to the conclusion that having a crowd behind you made very little difference to a teams chances of winning. Im sure it can have an effect both positive and negative but not as much as you would think.

Idiot the east stand give as much support as the stewards allow they chuck you out for standing they chuck you out for bad language half the fans around me have been issued with warnings I am sorry I used to chant all the time but had to many tellings off now I just dont bother I save my chanting for away games.

Reading is now a family atmosphere ground now thats what the safety stewards want thats what the club want. They dont want the old school fan at the ground.

WISH PEOPLE WOULD STOP BLAMING THE FANS you pay your money to support how you want. The die hards are at away games simple as.
