I am in the States at the moment (been here for 3 weeks and getting ready to wind up our military exercise and come home this weekend). It is just amazing how many Americans find that as 17 March approaches that they can claim they have Irish blood. Even more so when you see some of the surnames that are, apparently, from Irish stock. If every American who is 'half Irish' actually was then there must have more people living in Ireland then than there are now, by a long margin. So many people that the country must have been at risk of sinking!

If we ever get to the point where all our beer is dyed green for the Paddy's Weekend we have gone too far.

Quite a few.

Any particular reason why you want to know?

Sorry - the reason I said 'quite a few' is that it is almost impossible to put a figure on it. The population of Ireland dropped from about 8M to 5M during the famine, but the majority of that reduction was due to emigration to USA and the Britain. Actually defining the number that died is not an easy task.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Celebrate the Irish players who've done us proud this season, on their nations patron saint day which happens to fall on the day of a match. All just to have a bloody good laugh and be a bit silly.

It'll help the atmosphere, and it'll show the Irish contingent they're appreciated. What could possibly be wrong with it? If you don't like it don't join in, but do those who want to participate a favour and shut up. I'd be well up for joining in, but I can't make it, so I'll leave the delightful Northern Royals to it.

Oh, and what the oxf*rd does it have to do with that plastic armchair chelsea fan anyway?

Were you aware the French have things called passports and are capable of plying their trade outside their country (unlike most English footballers) you cretinous moron?

Yes but the point my arch nemisis was making was that if we had 3 frenchmen playing brilliantly for us over the course of the season, we could celebrate their contribution by doing Bastille Day themed celebrations, should we play on Bastille Day.

You don't think everyone involved in celebrating Ginger day was a genuine ginger do you?

Americans know this is cringeworthy

There is a classic Simpsons episode that mockingly plays on this very subject..everyone is Irish when St Patricks Day comes around, the same people that innocently give to Noraid..

STAR_Northern_Royals For anyone who hadn't realised it, next Tuesday's match at Doncaster is being played on St Patrick's Day and STAR Northern Royals will be attending in force - well about 30 of us anyway.

Given the strong Irish contingent in the team, it seemed too good an opportunity to miss and we would like all Royals fans to show their appreciation of the Irish players contribution by turning it into a Royals St Patrick's Day party night.

So if you can, please turn up in your green, white or orange (not too difficult with our latest away kit and "ginger" history) and play your part. Green, white and orange balloons can't be difficult to find and anything else with a (tasteful??) Irish slant would be welcome.

I'm sure we all believe we'd be a poorer team without the Irish lads, so let's try and give them and the rest of the squad a boost for the season's run-in, starting at Tuesday night's game.

Have a great St Patrick's Day - and night!!

STAR Northern Royals

Absolutely not. I'm not Irish .
When will these people realize that this sort of thing actually ruins the chance of any decent football atmosphere .
It’s an embarrassment.

Anything to improve the atmosphere is OK by me.
Most of the idiots knocking your idea are probably among the following:-

Spend home games sat on their hands
When not doing above are slagging off the players
Always leave 5-10 minutes early
Wont be at Donny on Tuesday anyway

Barry the bird boggler In addition this is thought to be SC's 1000th game as a manager, so there really should be something memorable to make it stand out...

the club and other media outlets are claiming the game v palace on saturday is his 1000.

can I just say - WORST IDEA EVER.

If it was Coppells 1000th game - why would you want to overshadow it by celebratiing Paddys day?

The Irish always have to 'get noticed' somehow.

Take Cheltenham this week. Everytime an Irish horse won, lets reel out the Irish flag and make a big thing of it. When there;s a footy match on and an Irish player makes contribution to winning the game the Irish newspaper headlines will say "Doyle saves Royals" even though they dismiss perhaps 2 or 3 crucial saves Hahnemann makes. It really does get tedious.

Royal Lady Pretty rubbish idea all round I'd say. We didn't celebrate American Independence Day on July 4 by having a tea party down at the club car park for a start.

The club are claiming Tuesday against Donny, not Saturday against Palace.
