League Cup 1st round draw

Last season there were 72 teams in the 1st round draw.

The Prem still only has 3 places in the UEFA Cup/Europa League dont they?, so no more byes to the 3rd rnd than usual. What am i missing?

35 + 13 + 2 (Newcastle, Middlesborough given byes) = 50 teams --> 25 teams in the second round

25 + 7 (4 CL + 3 EL) = 32 teams, an even power of 2

Oh, ive just worked it out.

Last season we had 4 teams in the UEFA, this year only 3. (Man City got a lucky dip last season) hence the restructure as 1 less team gets a bye to the 3rd rnd.

Must really ring home that how big that relegation from the Prem was a couple of years ago when you play Burton at home in round 1 of League Cup.
