At least Harper would have put pressure on the opposition when they had the ball..

And this lot didn't ? I thought one of the most impressive things was the constant closing down but with such a young side you do expect them to be busy. Does not matter who was oldest but BBC Berks said Rosenior was at about 2.20 before the game. What was significant is that youth is the way BR wants to go so patience from the fans will be required both watching the style of play and maybe waiting for the team to build up. They will make mistakes but they will also keep themselves in lots of games. What this structure needs is a CF with presence. Long looked busy (and seemed to have bulked up a bit ?) when he came on but it is a big ask unless you arethe size of Adebola.

I think we will have a lot of tight games and odd goal wins and losses and maybe too many draws unless we open up a bit. Swansea played a similar style last year (but with more panache) and suffered from too many draws. The youngsters look very promising though. Karacan, Davies and Robson Kanu in particular and that run from the left back for the free kick was superb.

No need to shout.

I'd rather see Marek come in for Tabb. I think Davies has enough grit and determination for most of the team...on today's showing, if nothing else.

My choice would be Davies in the Karacan role, and Matejovsky in the Davies role.

What this structure needs is a CF with presence[quote]

It needs a leader, someone to make things happen, and an experienced lone striker who can finish regularly what has been created. None of which were obvious today.

One of the features of the game was that when we did lose posession, we near on won it back almost immediately esp in the first half. Florist's frustration grew and grew. We did create a number of half chances towards the end of the match and on another day we could have scored 3 or 4. I agree with the comments regarding Davies. He has one hell of a dig in him.

One cautionary thought. How will the passing game go after London Irish have chewed up the pitch?

Nice to read about how good Pearce and Cisse were, but that does rather raise a question in my mind.

Why with those two plus Ingimarrson and Bikey on the books, have we just matched our club record transfer fee on another central defender, especially when we have an idiot at right back with no obvious cover?

The pitch should hold up better this season.

My gut tells me Ingi will leave this season, and that Bikey's future at RFC is seen as doubtful, or in the 'quarter-back' position, with Marek and Jem ahead of him.

Not enough 'through balls' put down the centre of the park and too much passing sideways all the time. We kept the ball well and the back four looked very confident today. We just need people like Noel Hunt up front with Long just behind.

Fair enough, but that's possibly. We certainly have no cover for the idiot at RB, who will undoubtedly get himself sent off at some point.

I'm fairly happy with todays performance, good ball retention although we looked a bit toothless up front. It was good to see Fed play the ball short with some goal kicks although we were lucky their forwards weren't too aware at times. I thought Long looked sharp when he came on.

According to a Senior Groundsman on 107 FM "It's not the Rugby, it's just the number of fixtures played on the pitch." evidently a Rugby game doesn't constitute a fixture then.

Just got back and haven't read the thread yet. THought I'd put my thoughts down before I forget.

Overall a decent showing. We kept the ball well and showed a lot of intelligence in our play. We looked very solid at the back and on the whole controlled the game.

Main problems were no urgency or pace in the vast majority of "attacks" and a lack of support from the wings or midfield to the lone striker. Once again we saw very few people in the box when we did get a cross in or a chance.

Federici - 7 One amazing save, how he kept it out I'll never know, would like to see him using his kick more. Lets vary things a little please.
Rosenior - 6 solid in defence but poor going forward. Some really really poor passing early on.
Bertrand - 7 tidy play and got forward well. Not sure he's got what it takes to make it at the top, and still think I'd prefer Armstrong, but we're strong at left back.
Pearce - 9 fantastic, comfortable on the ball, strong in the air and a good reader of the game. Not been convinced by him previously, but on that showing he has a big big future.
Cisse - 8 not in Pearce's league and a few silly mistakes, but none costly (and Pearce dropped at least one clanger), not very strong in the air, but perfectly good enough until Ivar or Mills come in.
HRK - 6.5 had some very dangerous moments and one to watch, but drifted in and out of the game.
Kebe - 6 Created lots of really good potential chances and managed to ruin virtually all of them himself. No secret i don't like him. Same old Kebe, flattered a lot without doing enough. No final ball.
Tabb - 6 tidy and energetic, but didn't do enough for me. the weakest of the central midfield.
Karacan - 7 played well, but for me isn't suited to the holding role unless he improves. Doesn't move the ball or turn quick enough. I know we want to play a passing game, but we need to move the ball forward with more urgency and drive.
Davies - 7 raw but lightening quick. Probably made the most mistakes in the middle, but also looked the most like creating or scoring. Could be a regular.
Church - 6 got barely a sniff upfront, but improved massively out wide. He injected urgency on that right flank.

Long - 7 a very good showing from Long, showing us what a good sub he was. No signs of a woeful first touch and caused problems. No surprise we showed some of our most attacking threat when he came on and Church went out wide.

We need to try and play more in the middle and not at the back. We need more movement in the middle and we need that change of pace to drive at the opposition more often. Flashes of attacking football. But I thought we looked distinctly pedestrian and had no real desire to score until the red card.

New style of football, same lack of attacking quality.

As I said, weather. The pitch always gets patchy with the Rugby, but it usally recovers for the back end of the season. Last season was different because of the heavy rains, ultra soft turf and of course, all those games on a soggy surface.
