Favourite Away Ground

Selhurst park always seems to be a good day/night out in my experience. And this weeks game was better than the Johnson/Harper draw for atmosphere.

Villa away was my first real experience of a 30k plus crowd for a Reading game (Simod cup, Playoffs and England games aside). When they equalised after Doyles opener, the noise the villa fans generated was incredible - and despite the result, I thought we played well enough and it sort of settled my nerves about how well we'd do in the Prem so that game stands out for me.

My favourite ground was Highbury - although it was filled by silent telly clapping yahoos and I had to sit in with their lot when I went.

Special mentions must go to the City of Manchester Stadium (the leroy lita show), and Old Trafford

Northampton - just turned up at Sixfields, bought ticket, shown to seat in main stand by steward who even went and fetched me a programme. All going well till Jamie Cureton scored. Jumped up and gave myself away. Treated to some friendly banter from surrounding Northampton fans. Enjoyed a beer with them at half time. Returned the compliment at the Holiday Inn for the return fixture.

QPR - in the pub before the game, all wearing blue and white hoops:-)

Brentford - went for a drink in The Griffin after the 1-1 draw - genuinely nice people.

Wigan - you go up the steps to the bar where a cheery middle aged lady sells you a pie and a pint and you share a joke.

Millenium Stadium Cardiff - before the play-off final, met some Walsall fans in a pub. We were painting our faces blue and white but we had some red and white left over for them!

That's how it should be!

First Away ground - Jenner Park Barry.
Favourite - County Ground - Northampton or Griffin Park.

Although I would say any away ground with a covered terrace gets my vote. As a Royals fan the Molineux terracing was a really special atmosphere.

Worst - Britannia Stadium. Only went once - I'll never go back. Also Boundry Park - Oldham. Uncovered terrace with horizontal snow was the coldest I've ever been at a football match.

Shrewsbury's beautiful old Gay Meadow. Picturesque, in a beautiful old English town next to a river with views of buildings and trees.

Griffin Park - a great place shoe-horned in to its community as if it had always been there. Hard, harsh, a bit gritty like Elm Park. Beautiful views of cranes, anonymous commercial buildings from the sixties and planes coming in and out of Heathrow. Pub on each corner? No argument. WIn or lose, have always loved trips to Brenters to see the Royals.

Barnet - before it was 'redeveloped'. The non-league experience, in the league. Loved their little 'taxi driver' firm on the side terrace like a load of fat Danny Dyers.

Craven Cottage. Dunno what it is about London grounds. Like the way they 'fizz' a bit on match days, and how you can disappear into another non-football world afterwards. Loved the away terrace there, always laughed at the psycopathic Met boys who seemed to be on a mission to nick you for even daring to turn the page of a programme. Great park nearby, to walk towards a nice London boozer after the game.

The old version of Brisbane Road.

The Manor Ground. What a shithoyle. Purely because it made Elm Park look like Wembley in comparison.

Ditto, Aldershot.

A big 'no' to all soul-less bowls and cantilevered, out of balance remakes.

Quite liked Ninian park, mainly due to the terrace.

Great old ground, loads of good pubs nearby, perfect all dayer, great away end.

Plus I can pretty much walk there.

White Hart Lane

My local ground, cracking old-fashioned atmosphere, full every week, close to the action. Scene of some cracking Reading matches as well.

I quite like Kenilworth Road for some reason.

It has a certain something! a friend has a box here and to get in, you walk up a terraced house front garden path, through an alley which should lead to a back garden, but no, instead it's a reception foyer into the ground, quite bizzare!

I also vote for Gigg Lane, can't believe so many other Reading fans have also mentioned it! Probably everyone one that was there on THAT Tuesday night game!

Grounds I like have got to be the City of Manchester Stadium, Old Trafford, Goodison Park, Bloomfield Road, Hillsborough and The Alexandra Stadium - the home of Crewe. Loved how we were so close to the pitch and the stand was about 8 rows deep.

For me Anfield was a bit of a disappointment. I've been twice with Reading (including this year) and both times it was absolutely silent. The famous Anfield Roar only comes out on a CL game or against the Top 4 and Everton.

Although the best ground I've seen Reading at has to be the Millenium Stadium. Just a shame Walsall brought about 400 fans with them.

The old version of Griffin park, before they redeveloped- what was it called, The Royal Oak end? memory fades.
I remember seeing that, and wishing we had a covered end terrace as well.

I've never been to WHL, but the atmosphere has always seemed stonkingly good on telly ever since Spurs were the regulars on the Big Match.

Yeah, cracking "old school" ground. Only went once which was, I think, Easter Monday sometime in the 70s. Full house, great atmosphere, comprehensive defeat.
