Shane has now played 10,236 Minutes for RFC, for 49 RFC Goals, a goal every 208 Minutes or 2.29 Games

His 20 Goals (with 11+ games to go) is already 2 better than Kevin Doyle's best RFC Season

I would be surprised if Long didn't surpass Kitson's tally of 22 now. Realistically though it would only be a better achievement if Long got over 25 as Kitson was out injured for a month or two of that season.

Tell us how Shane Long has done this season.


Fantastically well. He's done that over a period of time, all he needed was games.
Under Steve [Coppell] he was off the bench as a youngster, he tried to bring him on,
then he didn't play so many games under Brendan and he just needed to play games.

(Now where have I heard that before?)

He can play every day, he's that type, he can play with injuries, the players and staff have such respect for him.

Are you afraid someone will come in for him?


He's got 20 goals, it's out of your hands. When you've got someone with 20 goals, doing that
well, it goes with the territory.

Personally I'd keep him forever but I'm sure that won't be the case.

When Sheffield United went down to 9 men I had visions of Graham scoring 4 goals.

Just the one, thank God.


Otherwise Shane got a game in hand over the rest most of who failed.

While watching the 2nd half of Boro-Reading via Reading Player I was wondering if you had the data on the following query:

How many Shane Long goals are a direct result from an Ian Harte cross/corner/set piece? I wonder if Long's development as our star goal-scorer coincided with Ian Harte's arrival and his precision passing. So in particular I would love to know Shane Long's goals per game with Ian Harte and without Ian Harte. And if possible, how many of Long's goals are the direct result from a Harte assist.

Direct result = 1 and that's because Harte has 1 assist.

Otherwise it depends on whether you consider a cross that was semi cleared as an indirect assist. I've been keeping an eye on it thanks to RP and I've not noted a contribution where the ball takes a significant touch that changes its trajectory from a defender. Can't imagine it's more than half a dozen at most I only have Harte down as being invovled in 4 goals.

Harte's corners and freekicks don't account for many goals at all - other than those he's actually put in from the freekick himself. Howard has provided much more when it comes to set pieces.

Thanks Ian, I just got my Reading Player and am going back and watching all of the available games in full. That one assist was the Boro game obviously, just a perfect pass right on Long's head. This is a very fun team to watch.

Sorry didn't quite get that right. Think it's two, with Harte in general having played a role in about 7 goals. So I was a few out.

On another note I make it we've scored from 8 corners and 6 free kicks (not including the actual free kick going in). With 5 of those being taken by Howard.

Bit random, but i only just realised that Long has started all but the Pompey game this season. Great commitment from him and it's certainly paying off.
