ZacNaloen Eamon is a decent coach, just look at the quality and results the academy is getting at the moment.

I'd rather he stayed doing that though, for the rest of the season...

A very good point.

If we had no intention of sticking by poor Brian then what an unfortunate turn of events that we've lost a top scout.

I'd hate us to try with Eamonn only for it to fail half y through next season then we lose him altogether. Unless he does a fantastic job in the next two or keeps us up somehow I say let's get someone in.

That someone for me is Curbishley.

But Id be happy with Adkins. My only concern (and the only possible negative with Curbishley) is how much Adkins spent at Southampton. Can anyone compare? I don't know the numbers.

Southampton spent £33m this year.

And its looking like that will pay off for them. They may not have maximised the bang from their buck, but they've consistently outperformed us and should survive. When it comes down to it, that's all that matters for now. Whether they'll continue to overspend and how sustainable that is we'll see.

Wally Downes is open to a return to Reading as a defensive coach, according to @Craigo1871 who spoke to him earlier today. I don't know much about him but Jonny Fordham trusts him. That probably weakens his reliability actually. I'd be happy with this though. Good coach!

We could do worse than getting him in on a game by game contract whilst we're looking for a manager. If only to boost our seriously depleted coach numbers.

I doubt they'd appoint him before appointing a new manager - the new manager would more than likely want his own backroom people but I'd take Wally back like a shot.

Next Reading boss to be abstract concept
12-03-13

THE shortlist for the new Reading manager includes ennui, empathy and a sense of unfulfillable longing.

After Brian McDermott was fired for having human traits such as fallibility and honesty, club scouts are searching their dictionaries for experienced nouns and adverbs.

Reading owner Anton Zigarevich said: “In the battle to avoid relegation we may go for the word ‘battle’ until the end of the season.

“But until then our caretaker manager will be a crushing awareness of futility.”

If appointed, Reading’s new formless notion will be the first to manage at the top-level since England missed the 1994 World Cup under a vaguely remembered childhood holiday in Rhyl.

Other Premier League clubs are on alert as Reading may try to poach Chelsea’s avalanche of farce, or the smell of fried onions in the Bobby Moore Stand at Upton Park.

The club’s fans have been asked to be realistic in their expectations, but message boards have been buzzing with speculation that Barcelona’s smugness might be interested in a challenge.

Zingarevich added: “We just have to avoid appointing a raving lunatic like Paolo Di Canio.”

Of course they wouldn't.

Occasionally happens to a big club before a very big game, or in this case we've been big news this week. Reading, along with an ambitious foreign owner, gets a lot more attention now. It's a positive. Our profile continues to grow!

Sky have lots of time to fill and we're this weeks interesting story.

Do you think it's more significant than that?

Cheers! Was concerned it might coincide with announcement that he's our new manager.

Well if Talksport are talking fact for a change they've just said the board are focussing on Atkins which is positive I guess.
They've also said Di C*ntio is not in the running which is a huge relief.

I'm encouraged by the noises that Poyet might be interested. He'd possibly be top of my short list but I must admit I didn't think he'd be interested in a rebuilding effort here whilst his Brighton side are further along his 'project'. I'd have thought his next move would be to a slightly more attractive proposition.

My short list would look something like

Poyet
Solskjaer
Di Matteo
Parky
Adkins
Hughes

One of the worrying aspects of getting Adkins for us could be his disproportionate liking of attacking players at the expense of a tidy defence, which at Saints, seemed to contribute to them shipping way too many goals.

While we do need a change in style, I can't help thinking that a demoralised squad needs some really mean Muthaf*ka to offer less gifts to the oppo. Not suggesting the Pullis anti-football dirge btw. However, being as we're likely to go down it would be worthwhile looking at someone who could stop the rot first and then rebuild rather than going straight for the glory and coming unstuck.

Solsjkaer would be a dream appointment... so would Advocaat... so would Di Matteo.... we're running out of suitable managers.

On the flip side, you need someone to put a smile back on the players faces for the remainder of the season & he fits that bill.

(Yes I know that sounds ghey).

Massive positive. Please let it be true!

If Adkins can then also assemble a squad the like of which contains players like Puncheon, Lambert, Schneiderlin, Rodriguez, Lalllana, Ramirez - or even audaciously pinches a couple of them in the summer, I would be well happy!

Trillion times better than the pap we currently have.
