I disagree and this kind of thing just sounds like the type of tripe people on Twitter continually bang on about. It just seems like nit picking to me. People want a Martin Tyler or Clive Tyldesley quality broadcast on local radio for Burton vs Reading.

It's more that I don't want to hear about Mick's night out in Sunderland 15 years ago, Dellor's current running regime, their travel arrangements, Ascot or rowing, or what industrial estate/flats you can see out the corner of the ground during the game.

It's not asking them to repeat themselves, it's asking them to talk about something relevant and useful.

Recent form - this is usually covered pre match though they do usually bang on about it if it’s a bad run
Rival performance - usually have had opponent journo from related BBC radio station on the Friday preview
Current results elsewhere - yes this is provided, esp. for Newcastle, but if you’re a fan of the local sides below tier 6 you can **** right off
The women's team - did cover it when Reading had one in the top division, got the odd mention last year but now sunk without trace like most of men’s non league etc.

From my experience (admittedly not up to date) they get hardly anyone texting in and often the people in the studio will call people who've texted in before or who are just on the contact list to desperately try to drum up some interaction.

If you're paid to talk utter gash, would you want to share a studio with people who are very coherent and eloquent? It'd only show you up.

I think they are somewhat limited by the BBC's total obsession on viewer / listener participation. In trying to stay relevant they have to encourage interaction. There are sometimes some callers who are insightful, but they are not the majority. Have to say I've noticed fewer people calling in, so the same people seem to turn up week after week.

Rita's OK. She's doing her job. She's actually really knowledgable when she gets the (rare) chance to comment.

My personal bug bear about callers is when, after a defeat, some moron comes on and blames everything on a "lack of passion." Yeah, because that's the only thing that affects the outcome of a football match.
