I think we should seriously consider cashing in, certainly if bid goes to £6m upfront

I mean we are getting that sort of money for a player who has 12 months left and has had half a decent season

Friday's Legacy
brendywendy already got the replacement in manset last january

manset was not a future replacement for anyone. he came in to give us something different up front and offer a fourth choice centre forward. three strikers was/is never enough. if long does go we will bring someone else in.

disagree with this. yes he offers something different but was bought as more of a work-in-progress. Obviously we wouldnt buy a young striker from hereford and expect him to be good enough and be a first team player. Pretty sure Manset will step up soon though but we need a plan b

The trouble with threads like this is that 17/20 of the posts on a page are from idiots I've never even heard of.

1506: FOOTBALL - Press Association Sport reports that West Ham are weighing up a second bid for Reading striker Shane Long. The Royals are believed to have turned down an initial offer, thought to total around £7m with add-ons.

It doesn't matter to me who we sell him to as long as we get what we want for him and also bring in a decent experienced striker in to replace him.

It would seem a daft choice going to a shambles club like West Ham tho.

You don't seem quite so sure as you did earlier in the day bendy? Were you saying the same about Mills leaving us for another Championship team before it happened (genuine question)?

If nobody else comes in for him, and West Ham will double his money then it wouldn't surprise me if he went.

I thinks unlikely that there would be no Premier League willing to match West Ham though so I don't think we'll ever know.

Didn't he say he'd only move to a prem team? He would be better off staying where he's settled for another season and doing well than risking it at Wham.

McDermott said he'd only leave for a prem team, don't know if Long himself has said anything about it.

He won’t go to another Championship club, but if a Premier League club comes in, I won’t stand in his way

Agree - really cannot see Shane leaving for another Championship team.

I think if no PL club come in he might extend his deal with us.

The most likely scenario is that he will start the season with us and provided he starts the season ok then a desperate PL side (which has started the season badly) will come in at the last minute and he will leave on 31st Aug.

The only good thing about this scenario is that with a bgit of luck he willl still be with us for the Leicester game and I would dearly love it if we beat them!

If Shane is still with us by September 1st, I will be absolutely stunned. I can't see any scenario where the club will not accept x amount of millions for Shane versus losing him for nothing next summer.

WHU can almost certainly pay double what we can, they have 30k crowds and parachute money, they can take a punt on Long to score the goals at this level, as he did last season and hope that it takes them up. There can still be a sell on clause on failure, much like we had with Hunt and Doyle.

If I was Long I would move, unless a Prem side comes in that he fancies moving too.

They are also in deep financial doodoo, but of course that doesn't mean anything in the game these days

West Ham betting the farm on going straight back up because they know they're bolloxed if they don't manage it in the first year or two.

I can't see us selling to them. We'd have to get a LOT upfront. The best thing that could come out of this is Prem clubs seeing us reject big bids from West Ham, because we don't want to sell to a rival, and giving up on getting him wrongly assuming we'd reject the same bid from them.

If he goes to West Ham I'll be extremely disappointed with the club and Long.

If West Ham offered 7M up front with no add ons, it would be hard for the club to turn down but Shane might well still say "not interested".

If RFC are willing to offer him a one year extension on decent wages why take the risk of moving to West Ham - who have no certainty of going up. In fact in recent seasons only about a third of relegated clubs have gone back at the first attempt
