How tall is Brett Williams, is he the taller striker we need to mix things up?

I will be very disappointed if we buy this guy Williams.

He'd only be cover at best and that is NOT what we need.....................

BRETT Williams made it four goals in two games as Eastleigh's impressive winning streak continued at Lewes - but team boss Ian Baird still thinks he is capable of scoring more

But though Baird was once again impressed with Williams's handling of the lone striker's role,

"Hopefully the penny seems to be dropping with Brett," he said. "Playing up front on your own is no mean feat and, at the moment, he is carrying that responsibility extremely well.

"But is he gambling enough? I don't think so. All good strikers gamble on where they think the ball will go, whereas Brett is someone who reacts off what happens rather than before.

"He's not often in the right place at the right time.

"If you look at Brett's goals, they're nearly all good goals. You don't often see him score a little tap-in and he needs to add that to his game.

"Someone like (Swindon's former Poole Town striker) Charlie Austin looks to me to be a natural goal scorer, but there are parts of Brett's game that are better than Charlie's.

"He just needs to gamble more."

i think there will be another striker coming in as well as Williams. The Williams deal can be seen as a bit of gamble, its a bit like the Antonio deal in a way.

I think its good the club have said no to BWP if he has failed a medical. I seem to remember Bullard failed the medical at Hull and they signed him. When he got injured, insurers wouldn't pay his wages as Hull knew about the excisting problem and it was their risk

I remember hearing that about Doyle and Long. I'm sure Swindon said similar about Charlie Austin when they signed him from Poole...

Long was cover at best for about four years. And you can't always use the Doyle example; for every Doyle there's a Mooney.

Snowball This failed transfer has cost us a chunk of time. I wonder if we stopped looking?

So who else might we be looking at?

Charlie Austin (very long shot)

Leon Best (Loan)

Craig Reid (Newport County)

Brett Williams (surely just a punt and not the new number 1-2 striker)

Any thoughts?

Might look at Benyon from the mighty Gulls. Hope not though, not sure he's ready for CCC football just yet.

Exactly this. Getting this lad in as a gamble is a perfectly acceptable move.

If however he's the only forward we buy (after McDermott obviously wants to strengthen that department because of the Wright-Phillips saga) then we're back to 'making do'.

I'd love us to go out and prove we've got serious ambitions for improving this squad by bringing in someone like Steve Morison (we've probably missed the boat there now) or Jordan Rhodes (we'll probably be outpriced there too) who have shown they can score goals and would give us that bigger physical presence upfront.

Push the boat out for Austin, signal the intent. Or maybe Le Fondre from Rotherham?

Is the intention of this thread now to try get it past the Tommy smith mark?

I would guess with this having fallen through we might aim for Simon Cox until the end of the season with a look to buy on promotion (I would guess)

It's only Jan 12th and I doubt we've blanked from our memory all the scouting and consideration we've done when looking at options to add upfront.

The worry for me is that we won't be looking at the right calibre of player because of the money involved. At £300k Wright-Phillips was a bit of a snip but we're told we didn't follow up any interest in Austin because of the asking price.

Maybe we only walked away from Austin because Wright-Phillips represented better value, but I'd hope we were looking at players that are likely to cost us in excess of £750k, because other wise we're generally not looking at the right level.

As I said above, my current first choice targets are Jordon Rhodes at Huddersfield or Steve Morison at Millwall. Niether are similar players to Wright-Phillips though so McDermott might have other ideas!

@ £300,000 BWP was worth the risk, knee problem or not. Typical RFC, we now turn to a complete unknown non-league striker, you couldn't make it up.
Seriously hacked off now.
