There are perfectly good reasons why Long could go to West Ham, but not many good reasons why we would sell him as we clearly value him far higher than West Ham will pay and we wouldn't want to sell to a rival, especially when there is genuine Premiership interest.

Hoop Blah
Victor Meldrew When did logic ever come into transfers?.
I heard an agent on the radio the other day who suggested that 98% of transfers are down to higher wages.
Most fans' ideal world concept of players moving for glory or honours IMHO is often used by players as a smokescreen.
If we are paying Long £20,000 per week and West Ham or Leicester or anybody else offer him £35,000 he'll go.
If wages were not the issue I think he would have gone to Celtic.
I'm still hopeful of a West Brom deal with Cox coming to us.

I'm not sure Celtic were ever in a position to bid enough for the chance to offer him wages, although if wages weren't an issue perhaps they'd have been able to find the extra for the upfront fee.

Totally agree on the likelihood of Long moving to someone like Leicester or West Ham is they're offering a significant wage increase. As I said the other day though, I doubt it will get to the point where Championship sides like them are the only ones willing to meet our asking price and he'll eventually end up somewhere like West Brom, Wigan, Blackburn or Everton.

As I said if wages were not the issue I think he would have gone to Celtic (as a preferred option).
I heard the other day from a very reliable source that Celtic's top wages are £30,000 per week and they won't go higher.

If reports and speculation is anything to go by, and Big Sam's comments in TV might suggest they are, I see why you think West Ham are so far adrift of our valuation.

id say that if we are selling to west ham, a rival in this leage th easking price should go up to reflect that.

This is what worries me, it seems West Brom are the only premiership club with firm interest but they will apparently only pay £4-5m which isn't enough, so West Ham may end up being the only viable option.

Or the option of him staying? We could just offer him a one year contract extension if no-one comes in for him. I think there's a possibility he'd sign that.

Just out of interest I picked up lat Xmas's copy of the Whiff.

Two different articles were dismissive of Long 'will never score 20 goals a season' etc. if those opinions were a true statement of his potential we would have snapped someone's hand off for a £1m.

Then again on the then recent Ledge loan signing the comment was 'what is the point of that' or similar.

All I can say is: In Brian we trust!

Why?
That's the sort of amount Graham went for and I and others think that Graham is a better all-round player so £3million might well be about right for a Championship striker with Mikhail-Smith also going for a similar amount and Carlton Cole was supposedly going for £4 million.
Whether RFC think he is worth more than that is another matter.
