I know silly money would talk, but Heston has said several times that Reading won't sell Long to another Championship club. Therefore WBA, Liverpool and Celtic are the favourites if they show enough resolve.

For the record I have heard that WBA have made another offer of cash plus Simon Cox....

Lennon's comments indicate he does not have the £7m plus we are demanding for Long.

Lennon seems to be hoping that we will drop our price as transfer dealine day looms - wishful thinking.

I'm strangely hoping Long does absolutely nothing for the first month, and starts scoring after the 1st September...

More chance of the price going up as deadline day looms. If we really do need to sell Long to balance the books, we'd get the price we want in January from one of the relegation strugglers in the prem.

If West Brom offer cash + Cox take it. He did get a little run in the team at the end of last season though and he's still young. Even if WBA are willing, he may want to stay another season and fight for his place in the team. Moving back to us would be giving up on Premiership football (in the short term).

celtic haven't got the money for long. wba were laughed at when they offered £3m. i can't imagine celtic even having £4m to offer.

Scott Brown turned us down when Sir Steve was here. I'd rather see Thomas Rogne + cash.

Going on past experience December would be more likely.

The money doesn't really matter to me. Any sum + Cox would make me happy.

I don't think we'll sell to a side outside the PL. I don't think Long wants to earn more money per say, he wants to play in a better standard of league every week or play for Reading. The SPL wouldn't increase the standard, especially if he signed for one of the two teams who could compete in the Championship.

Snowball

Ian Royal (Long's) only ever played well and successfully for more than the odd game or from the bench for about 4 months of his 5 years with us and those were two periods over two separate seasons with a load of poor performances in between them.

He's completely inconsistent. He doesn't offer much other than effort when he isn't scoring...

Never worth more than a £1m. But I'd happily emphasise his strengths and deny his weaknesses in a negotiation if I thought I could take some mug for more.

Thought this was worth a bump. Made me laugh.

Well done Ian - showing your encyclopedic football knowledge off again!

How things change in a year. Let’s not write off Hunt, Church, Manset or Robson-Kanu before the season even starts or we might regret it this time next year.

CLASSIC

I think everything he said there was fair game a year ago. The "funny" part of that post is "never worth more than a £1m", but whilst that would have come back to bite us, it was also fair game at the time.

If Harte doesn't have the same success with free kicks next season, would you take kindly to me pulling you up on your comments about him, even though everything in Harte's career to date indicates that he's an excellent free kick taker?

Yeah Lolz at me for describing Long's contribution prior to December 2010 perfectly. Everthing that's happened since definitely re-writes history.

Congratulations to the lad, as I've said many many times now. He finally pulled it out his arse and realised the potential everyone saw during his first season or two with us. Of course, he's still only had one fantastic half season on top of what's described in that quote. Not that I expect him to be as utterly mediocre at this level as he was previously.

Prior to December £1m would have been outstanding money for Long. Now anything above £5m is excellent business thanks to the last 8 months.

No thanks. He's become a right thug at Celtic. Did you see any of the "friendly" with Inter today?
