You don't think Poyet is young and ambitious with a big name?

The key thing many seem to be missing here is that we're not necessarily looking for who will be best for us next year. We're looking for someone who is going to be able to take this club to another level over the next 5 years. We're looking for someone that will take advantage of the investment Anton is willing to put in by bringing in good players, getting them to play good football, and grow the club. Poyet has been completely behind Brighton's growth over the last few years, hence their fans reluctance to lose him. He inherited a L1 team, took them up as champions, and has got them competing at Championship level with a modern brand of football that would be more successful at a higher level than the way we play right now. We're looking for someone who will throw themselves fully into the role and embrace the challenge of completely changing the club's philosophy.

These are exciting times, and at some point those of you still pining after Brian will realise that. We aren't satisfied being 'little Reading' anymore. Get used to it.

Adkins not capable of this, with his superior track-record?

Modern brand of football indeed - as if Gus Poyet invented the concept of passing the ball

I think you're just a little bit star-struck by something new, shiny and foreign. Bless ya.

floyd__streete So, 55% of you want the man with one promotion under his belt, as opposed to the man with 4 promotions.

Ok then.

We will always be a stepping stone for any ambitious manager.

Poyet would be nice for a while if he could get us playing attractive, passing , winning football.

As much as I don't go along with the 'follow the Swansea' example that is the current fad* I think you have to look at the next appointment as Reading's Martinez moment.

As winchester says, this is an appointment for the long term to kick us into modern football where possession is more important and dealing with the extra man in the midfield is standard as the majority of teams now play that way.

As with Martinez at Swansea, Poyet or Adkins don't have to stay for the next 5-10 years to make this shift work, they just need to lay the foundations and put us on the right track for following managers. It may need more patience and backing than Rodgers got to make work, but I think it's quite interesting and exciting that it seems we're trying to give it a go.

* 10/15 years ago we were all talking about following the Charlton model or other clubs looking at 'the Reading way' as the way to build a successful mid-sized club. Football moves on and Wigan and Swansea are now those clubs leading the way forward.

So, we want someone to take us forward over 5 years? Well that rules out Poyet then, because if he does a half-decent job, he will go onto bigger and better things in half that time.

There is no patience in football any more!! If Poyet has a bad season next season and we're where Wolves are now, he wont get another couple of years, he'll be gone in no time. AZ wants an immediate return to the Premier League. Who ever takes over has one massive job on their hands!

What intrigues me is that if it is someone 'big' like Poyet, he will want and expect a big wallet to play with. We've never seen that here before! Didn't work for Leicester either...

I do think Adkins is capable of that, quite easily, which is why as I said earlier in the thread I'd be very happy with either.

However, the idea of 'something new' is something I find quite enticing tbh. It's been the same brand of football for 10 years now (except for the Rodgers era) and it would be nice to see something a little different. The comparisons to Rodgers I don't agree with. If Poyet joins then he will be given the backing to make the transition work, Rodgers was expected to do it with a squad of limited footballers and limited backing.

Ideally neither, but unless the "Reinstate Brian movement" gains some pretty rapid momentum, it's highly likely to be between these two.

So on that basis it's Poyet all day long for me. The thought of Adkins smug visage at a Reading press conference fills me with vomit inducing dread. Anyway he'd want/need* (delete as appropriate) about a £20 million war chest to get us back up whereas Poyet wouldn't be so demanding I reckon.

Plus we'd finally get to sign Craig Mickail-Smith (sp)...

Happy with this. Poyet would be my first choice, which is what the club seem to think. But i would be happy with Adkins if not.

Either seem a good appointment to me to try and move our style of football in the right direction. Personally I prefer Adkins. I'm impressed by pretty much everything about him. But it's reasonably close.

Sums up my thoughts. I mean if we wanted a man with promotion under his belt we'd got for the reinstate Brian option at 40/1.
The only good thing about Adkins for me would be converting instantly to a STG, coming on here and savaging the new man and his team, particularly his choice of captain and just generally spitting bile and predicting doom.

WE DON'T JUST WANT PROMOTION.

We want something slightly longer term than that :)

Adkins. I really didn't like Poyet's Brighton, they didn't seem to have much respect, like Leeds-lite. I understand Poyet moved on one of the major trouble makers, but still, I value fair play and sportsmanship and stuff. I'm almost as proud of our disciplinary record under Coppell as I am of the achievements.

Still hoping for Dolan to change his mind, or Nas Bashir or someone along those lines to come in. Would even take Pards back if Newcastle get rid.
