OldBiscuit Too many players to choose from, so many that I really can’t make my mind up.

Shocked to see that Trevor ‘Stabber’ Morley didn’t get a place in anyones Team, not even the bench. He was probably one of the classiest strikers to pull on a Reading shirt. Hard working, full of guile, could turn on a sixpence, and knew exactly where to put the ball.

Another surprise omission, especially from the older posters would be George Harris on the wing.

As people so often say, football is about opinions.

I wouldn't put Morley anywhere near the top 10 strikers let alone in the best starting 11.
A diver and a cheat who's aim was just to get free-kicks and I forever blame Jim and Mick for bringing him in and breaking up the Nogan/ Lovell partnership and it eventually led to their sacking.

I don't disagree though on Harris (and Colin Meldrum from the same era) who fall in the category of "how the fcuk did we get him?" which also includes Osborn and Wdowczyk.

Agree with Spizz that there are too many to break it down to eleven and also agree with leon that none of the current squad would get a look-in.

Nogan and Lovell were long since expired and rubbish by the time Morley started playing.

Neither of them get anywhere near a top 10.

:?: :?:
"Neither" I assumed you meant neither (meaning a maximum of 2) of Nogan and Lovell whereas I think you might have meant none of the three.
Please be clearer in future Ian.

First Season Ticket 99/00 so I can't really see past anything other than

Hahnemann

Murty
Ingimarsson
Sonko
Shorey

Little
Sidwell
Harper
Convey

Kitson
Doyle

The only one I might swap out would be Convey for Jobi.

In our 1981/2 season of mediocrity in Div 3 we had:

Future England player-Neil Webb
Future England player-Kerry Dixon
Future FA Cup winning scorer-Lawrie Sanchez

So, amongst mainly drab stuff, we saw 3 of the most successful players that we have ever had.

Relative to the team around him and the impact he had for us Morley was a legend in some ways.

"Ooh! Trevor Morley!" had balls of steel (and a head of one after his surgery I think) and would do absolutely anything to get a goal in a very poor team and IIRC singlehandedly kept us up with many more goals than he should have got with the shit team around him.

I think with today's more-savvy referees and TV replys his habit of falling over whenever anyone got within a yard of him in the penalty areas wouldn't be anywhere nearly as effective as it was then.

Too early for me, but I would have loved to seen that early-mid 90s team.

Always hear my dad and uncles going on about Wdowczyk, Osborn, Hislop, Gilkes, Lovell, Quinn, etc...

------------------------------------ Shaka ------------------------------------

Murty -------------- Upson ------------- Sonko ---------- Shorey

Little ------------- Sidwell -------------- Parkinson ------------- Gilkes

------------------------- Quinn ------- Kitson ----------------------------

On the bench
Forster
Sigurðsson
Osborn
McAnuff
Doyle
Kebe
Williams

Risky without a keeper but if any of the above got a knock i'd consider Martinez but would prob opt for another outfielder like Cureton or Convey.

He was the definition of creating contact to go down, so I think he'd be fine.

First game: 1978
Fave season: 93/94 - we were just so unexpectedly good. We were "better" in later years but the joy of 93/94 was never topped IMO.

Shaka
Murty
Ady Williams
Wdowcyzk
Shorey
Little
Osborn
Sidwell
Gilkes
Quinn
Doyle

Honourable mentions: Bowman my first hero, Dixon, super Trev, super Kev, Gooding, Parky, Dyl, it gets a bit shit for a couple of years and then Curo, Butts, Fozzie, Upson our best ever loanee, Little, Convey, Harps, Kits, SHunt and NHunt, Alf Roberts, Kebe, Gylfi, al-Habsi, and for one glorious season Kermo. I've got a lot of time for Swift and Joao too but there's better players ahead of them.

Mark210 Best season? 94/95 and for me the best football I've seen at played Reading was under McGhee then continued on by Quinn & Gooding. A regular since 86/87 (first season in Division 2) although I saw three lower division games : 75/76 (v Northampton & Lincoln, both taken to by my Uncle) and one in 84 (v Aldershot) before that.

1 Death
2 Bernal (my fave Rdg player. All Action)
3 Richardson
4 Beavon
5 Wood
6 Bowman
7 Osborn
8 Bremner (fave Reading goal v Villa, Lg Cup '86)
9 Dixon
10 Friday
11 Senior
Sub : Quinn

Honourable mentions: Crown & Horrix.

CORRECTION: Bremner's goal v Shrewsbury is my fave - same season, 86/87 although he did score a good one v Villa too. (My memory being improved just seeing the match footage on You Tube).
